When i surfed throught the site i felt its a forum for Quant. Too much of stress on Quant. but less stress on other two sections. Let me remind us all other two sections are just as important as Quant so people are supposed to pay equal attention to all of them. Infact i feel we need to put more efforts to RC,VA and Reasoning.

People who have been through this will agree to me on following two points:
1) CAT has started giving more focus on english and DI lately with these sections becoming more difficult.

2)It is moving towards GMAT kind of question in English Usage, RC and Reasoning. More Focus is being given to the speed of reading and usage part. The fact is more visible by CAT 2005 with more words to read and less number of questions to answer in RC. In vocab focus have been towards Usage rather then just on synonyms and antonyms. And there were 5 Critical Question. and also questions on summary all inticating to one thing, they are looking for Voracious readers.

Let us also understand this that for other two sections, one need to develop habits and it cant be done in 3 months or 6 months or at the last moment. I need to make fast calculation speed and observations for DI as part of my life and then only one can use them while giving CAT. Same goes with the VA and Reasoning section. You can not mug up gramer rules or vocab list or few reasoning sets and solve questions in this section. And dont forget this section always has high cut offs.

Remember in quant we can mug up formulas. it can be practised on short notice. even faculties can help us in getting closer to our target, but in other two sections they cant help you.

I know the problem with other two sections is even if I am not good at it, I dont know what to ask. And cant we imagine the magnitude of problem with these sections. We don't know what to ask for or where to look for the help.

So guys go after VA first and set the things straight, we can always take care of Quant.

I completely agree with u...the trends indicate that the only way to maximise the scr is thru scoring heavily in this section in particular...so lets share our strategies asto how to improve our reading speed as well as cracking the RC qs with a reasonable accuracy....hope to have sm pointers in this section....

problem with va/rc is tht u just cant decide one fine day to improve ur scores...
cat 2004 was a very good test of understanding the language ..the passages were ot too long..all of them were of medium length..key was understanding.. there were absolutely no direct qns. VA was also fairly straight forward for ppl witha good understanding of the language.
My prescription for improving va/rc scores...
1)Read a lot ...and read different stuff
2)Word power made easy..norman lewis
3)All abt words ..Nurnberg .smthing
4)How to read faster ...Norman lewis
5)Download sm software speed reading software frm net ..use it ...
i hv one will try to attach it..let u kow later.
6)Dont try to study grammar.. it ends up creating more confusion thn it solves.
better try to link to sm sentence uve read to judge whthr a sentence is right or wrong ..
(tht needs loads of readng)

not just I, but many in this forum will disagree with you on this. Alas! if life were that simple!
i do agree that adequate focus on VA is lacking in this forum. This is only because (as you say) no one can really help you when it comes to english. you need to read and work on it on your own. Quant is probably the only part of the paper where others can help you get through.

hey, its right that no one can directly give anyone a real and tested formula to improve the verbal part...

What can be done is that ppl having good command on verbal section can share their personal views on how can a person improve his verbal.This way we will have a wide range of practices and options....

Some of these options may lok good to a particular person and he may then try it out..

The first step towards improving is to accept that you have the problem and not running away from it. So lets do firs thing first and accept that its hard to help people in improving english, but having said that let me tell you that people can help you to improve your self faster then you do it other wise. That was first thing

Now let look at other side of it. This forum is not a turorial site but a forum for discussions and learning from each others experiences so sharing each others experiences will help us all improving each other. Also we can use this forum to get our doubts cleared in verbal ability and reasoning.

If accepting the problem is the first step setting the target is the next step:

1) What is the reading I need to achieve before i go for CAT?
2) Vocabs to be enriched byhow many words before i go for CAT?
3) What should be benchmark for my performance in diffrent sections of VA and Reasoning?

After I have set the goals or the target next or the third step is to find out where do i stand today. so take up the old mock papers or old CAT papers and take the exam seriously and score your self and note down your performace section wise. Note down the mistakes you made. Note down the weakness, Note down the strengths. You canalso use news paper to find out your speed in RC.

Having set my goal and finding out where I am i do the GAP analysis, That is my step number four. So find the gaps you have from the target set to where you are and then make time table to get over them and set milestones to find out wher your are every time and every time you achieve the milestones celebrate them thats step number five.

All this will give direction to your studies and will help you organise your self.

I know it seems to be more as gayan session but let me tell you this small things done in the begning can decide my ends.
