hi,
i got a %ile of 97 in CAT 2003 and managed a call from NITIE, but cudn't convert though
for RC, the key is reading and reading more.... no other short cuts for RC
read Front Line, Business World etc etc and every book u find under the sun..
make sure u read them with interest.
parallely try to figure out the words u find new, and note down the word with it's meaning and it's usage.. that shud really help u.
KEY: read more and more, read stuff from diff areas
All the Best

crack that RC - 10-07-2004, 11:05 AM

Hey Buddy,
I agree RCs are tough to crack but with enough reading speed and good amount of concentration, it is not all that difficult. I would strongly recommend "How to read faster and better" by Norman Lewis. It helps you improve your reading speed and explains some concepts that'll help you crack RCs. If you're into Yoga and stuff like that, it'll help you concentrate on the passage and it'll keep your mind from wandering away.

But still the best thing to do would be to read read and read. Read on as many varied topics as you can. Economics, Psychology, history etc. etc. I'm not saying that you'll get lucky and get a passage that you've already read but atleast you'll be familiar with the jargon that is used in the passage. That helps a lot.
Anyway best of luck with the RC section.

Hi vahgar

For a start u can try the "Opinion" (Editorial) Section of The Hindu at www.hindu.com and click on the opinion link on the left. Make it a habit of reading all the passages daily and i'm sure u'll have a marked improvement in attempting RC Passages

Otherwise it's just Reading.....Reading and More Reading that helps for RC. In case ur finding it difficult to get started then u can also start off with some Plain Fiction just to get into the Reading Habit........Sooner or Later u'll want to start moving upwards to Management Books

HTH

Yes, Vahgar most of them will be from Current & Political Affairs. But Just read 1 or 2 Passages and you will quickly realise that the level of language is way higher than what we normally read in TOI or Other Papers.

That why I said if your starting out than those passages are the best. Once you get comfortable with them just take a look right at the end of the Page...........where they have classified news into various categories and interests .........For Ex. the below link refers to a passage from Sci Tech their Science Weekly..........Take a look and this kind of Passage is normally what we will see if there was a Science RC in Cat..........

Morover just chk the remaining links for Business- Business Line

for Literary Reviews- Some of the Best Reviews ...For Ex see the Below Link

The List is endless and best of all it's Free and one of the fastest loading sites with no unnecessary graphics
