Verbal Queries... - 01-06-2004, 11:29 AM

hi junta...
i generally have problem with Verbal.. basically this is one area in which i lack... & while solving problems i find it difficult to understand the answer (& sometimes the the brief explanation which is provide alongwitht he answer)... & i'm sure i won't b alone... So i thought why not start a thread in which we can put forth our problems & ask the experts....

Here's my problem...

1. Camus broke with Sartre in a bitter dispute over the nature of Stalinism.
(A) in a bitter dispute over
(B) over bitterly disputing
(C) after there was a bitter dispute over
(D) after having bitterly disputed about
(E) over a bitter dispute about

It wud b nice if u respond with detailed explanation of why u choosed an option & why rejected others.....

Ashish

The correct option is [E].

The correct usage is "over a dispute"

the trick to solve these Q is to see the words before and after the Target work

here the Target word is Dispute...

generally OVER is the word that comes before dispute..(with much reading u will get this)

so only 2 options

only E fits the bill...

The 1st one seems right:
Keep reading newspapers, magazines: that helps:
Try Swan - English Usage (Oxford Publications)

Do Verbal from IMS material. Better than TIME, and CL.

Regarding the ques by ashish ...

"dispute over" is the correct usage - agreed
so only A or C fit the bill.

but what about "broke with"???
i think option A suggets that Camus broke up during the dispute and C suggests he/she broke after the dispute both can be correct .. how do u choose which is best?
