hi all,
i m quiet weak at english...
i m looking for some material that could help me in VA ...
these days in CAT the amount of reasoning questions have increased a lot in english section also...... and coaching institutes are not that good...( i mean one could not safely rely on them as they themselves were not able to give the correct answer for CAT 06/07 english section....)
i guess following GMAT book ( preferably official guide ..) could help me... as one could rely on the answer set of these books...
if anyone has the pdf of the GMAT books... kindly attach it here... or send a link from where i can download it...
also if any body has any other solutions for my problem.. do reply me....
correct me if i m wrong in any way.... as time is very less..
regard,

The chief executive is, therefore, less well informed about problems at lower levels than are his or her subordinates at those levels. The conclusion drawn above is based on the assumption that - problems should be solved at the level in the management hierarchy at which they occur
- employees should be rewarded for accurately reporting problems to their superiors
- problem-solving ability is more important at higher levels than it is at lower levels of the management hierarchy
- chief executives obtain information about problems at lower levels from no source other than their subordinates
2. Just as the fishing line becomes too taut, so too the trials and tribulations of life in the city can become so stressful that one's mind can snap. Which one of the following most closely parallels the reasoning used in the argument above? - Just as the bow may be drawn too taut, so too may one's life be wasted pursuing self-gratification.
- Just as a gambler's fortunes change unpredictably, so too do one's career opportunities come unexpectedly.
- Just as a plant can be killed by over watering it, so too can drinking too much water lead to lethargy.
- Just as the engine may race too quickly, so too may life in the fast lane lead to an early death.
3. Foreign investment is composed of direct investment transactions (investment in plant, equipment and land) and securities investment transactions. Throughout the post World War II period, net increases in U.S. direct investment in Europe (funds outflows) exceeded net new European direct investment in U.S. Each of the following, if true, could help to account for this trend except - Land values in Europe were increasing at a faster rate than in United States.
- Duties on imported goods in Europe were higher than those imposed by the United States.
- The cost of labour (wages) was consistently lower in Europe than in United States.
- Labor mobility was much higher in the United States than in Europe.
4. In Brazil, side-by-side comparisons of Indianised honeybees and the native honeybees have shown that the Indianised bees are far superior honey producers. Therefore, there is no reason to fear that domestic commercial honey production will decline in the United States if local honeybees are displaced by Indianised honeybees. Each of the following, if true, would weaken the argument except - The honey bees native to Brazil are not of the same variety as those most frequently used in the commercial beekeeping industry in the United States.
- Commercial honey production is far more complicated and expensive with Indianised honeybees than it is with the more docile honeybees common in the United States.
- If Indianised honeybees replace local honeybees, certain types of ornamental trees will be less effectively pollinated.
- In the United States a significant proportion of the commercial honey supply comes from hobby beekeepers, many of whom are likely to abandon beekeeping with the influx of Indianised bees.
5. In the game of basketball, scoring a three-point shot is a skill that only those with a soft shooting touch can develop. Abhishek, however, was a great player, so even though he did not have a soft shooting touch he would have excelled at scoring three point shots. Which one of the following contains a flaw that most closely parallels the flaw contained in the passage? - Eighty percent of the 12th passouts at Mumbai go on to get a bachelor's degree. Dheeraj is a 12th passout at Mumbai, so he will probably complete his studies and receive a bachelor's degree.
- If the police don't act immediately to quell the disturbance, it will escalate into a riot. However, since the police are understaffed, there will be a riot.
- The Meek shall inherit the earth. Sushma received an inheritance from her grandfather, so she must be meek.
- During the Kargil War, the powerful had to serve along with the poor. However, Sujoys' father was a judge, so Sujoy was able to get a draft deferment.
Directions for 6 to 10:Each of the following questions has a paragraph from which the last sentence has been deleted. From the given options, choose the one that completes the paragraph in the most appropriate way.
6. The labour market in developed countries is already affected by these trends. Firms in traditional sectors, hampered by their image as unprogressive, are finding it increasingly difficult to hire adequate numbers of people. In other industries, firms are competing for a limited pool of talent and are investing considerable time and money in recruitment. Younger people seem to be increasingly attracted to self-employment, entrepreneurial opportunities and the professions. - Additionally, they exhibit a predilection towards traditional sectors.
- The inability of traditional sectors to downsize coupled with reduced lay-offs is the reason behind this shift.
- And the business press regularly contains reports of high-flying executives who quit comfortable jobs to start their own business, work as independent consultants, or more simply to spend more time with their families.
- Innovations are not always motivated by a genuine desire to respond to their own needs.
7. Have a short break, allowing your brain to rest, and begin to integrate the ideas generated so far. You then need to make a new Mind Map, in which you identify the major branches or Basic Ordering Ideas, combining, categorising, building up hierarchies, finding new associations, and reconsidering in the context of the whole Mind Map any ideas that initially appeared "stupid" or "absurd". - As we have seen, the less conventional an idea, the better it often turns out to be.
- In fact, the less bohemian, the better it often turns out to be.
- Such a shift represents a massive and instantaneous reorganisation of entire structures of thought.
- These should be dismissed as "uncalled for" repetitions.
8. Both Japan and Russia achieved their development in an authoritarian political and social framework. The outcome in both cases, from standpoint of the peace of the world and democratic ideals, was highly unfavourable. In the absence of outside aid, the only way to accumulate capital was to increase production without taking much of the benefit in more consumption, or even while pushing consumption standards down. - Thus in the start of the development process, investment was made in consumer goods so that people could buy their essential goods from within the country and not through outside trade.
- Despite this, the people in these countries could afford to have a highly favourable standard of living as they were trying to establish better infrastructure by using technological advancements.
- So in the early days of economic development, the people had to be motivated to change their accustomed ways quickly, to work hard, and to forego present consumption so that capital investment could be made.
- So authorities had to consider a closed economy with emphasis on consumption activities related only to setting up of infrastructure and industry.
9. Not only does the lack of education among women make the dissemination of nutrition education difficult, it appears also to be a major obstacle to campaigns for family planning. The education level of women is significant because it has a direct impact on their chances of employment; and the number of employed women in a country's total labour force has a direct bearing on both the Gross National Product and the disposable income of the individual family. - The involvement of women in running the economy can result in better provision of social welfare services.
- Women are the backbone of a country trying to become a developed economy from an underdeveloped economy.
- Educated women have the perspective to raise the morale of the work force and create an environment conducive to generating higher incomes.
- Educated women can work towards enhancing the productive capacity of the economy by becoming active participants in the development process.
10. The use of knowledge management approaches and techniques needs to ensure appropriate management of sophisticated intangible assets. Some visible results of knowledge economy are new knowledge-based products and services, intensified personalisation of products and services, Web-based global markets, drastically increased accessibility of information and ability to find relevant information, fast and cheap communication and cooperation on a global scale, as well as online education. - A knowledge-based system must establish a demanding and competitive market, such that analysing of information becomes a simplified task for growing economy.
- The production and the use of ideas and knowledge has increasingly become the source for economic growth in modern economy, strongly influenced by global markets, development of information and communication technology, and rapid scientific progress.
- For a unique establishment of knowledge solutions, it is the prerogative of the management to understand that its usage in all fields can ensure the gains of scientific development to reach a higher plane.
- In a competitive global market scenario, the establishment of a knowledge economy precedes all production as only then can benefits of mutual trade between competitors especially in the field of information and communication be derived.
