Though right now I do not have answers I will post answer once I get...
The questions below has a paragraph from which the last sentence has been deleted. From the given options, choose the one that completes the paragraph in the most appropriate way.
People are often in an ensemble of different players, on a stage with various props, costumes, scripts, and stage directions from producers and directors. Together, they comprise situational features that can dramatically influence behavior. What individuals bring into any setting is important, but so are the situational forces that act on them, as well as the systemic forces that create and maintain situations. _________.
1)What this means is that while most people are good most of the time, they can readily be led to act anti-socially.
2)What this means is that legal theory must reconsider the extent to which powerful situational and systemic factors should be taken into account in punishing individuals.
3)What this means is that the same situation that can inflame the hostile imagination and evil in some of us can inspire the heroic imagination in others.
4)What this means is that social situations have the power to dominate individual dispositions.
5)What this means is that individuals must consider fundamental strategies of resisting and challenging unwanted social influences.
My take is 2.
Please discuss....

Please discuss.... | well pooja.. i can explain it by the elimination process..
1 is out of window as anti-social is too strong a word and no such feeling is explained in the paragrapgh...
lets put 2 on hold...
in 3rd the sentence actually means that individual can mould the effect of sorrounding according to their character.. which is against the message what passage want to convey...
4th again is eliminated as no point of domination of one over another is raised..
and 5th is again not suiting the track..
so dunno know about the correct..
but 2 seems to be the most appropriate answer..
is back........

Hi pooja,
My take,
1)doesnt seem relevant.
2)brings a twist to the passage. The individuals in the para were referred to the criminals.
3)The passage is about different situations acting on the same individual rather than same situations acting on different individuals.
4)seems wrong as social situations are said to be contributory but not 'dominating'.
5)i think is correct as,after describing the social influences, the concluding part could be the way individual should react to these fluctuations.
My answer is (5) MEMBER:INDIA UNITED DREAM TEAM MOCK STORY 2008

My take option 2
1. doesn't suit coz it talks of people being readily led to act antisocially.
3. talks about one situation affecting individuals differently which is not the gist of the passage
4. talks of social situations dominating which is not the case as the paragraph talks of influence not dominance.
5. doesn't go with the line of thought of the passage. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to tyro.novice For This Useful Post:

Source explanation:
Options 1 and 2 talk only about dealing with the harm arising from the situation.
Option 4 is close, but eliminated because of the word ‘dominate’ which is unjustifiable - domination could be the other way round too.
Option 5 is eliminated because of the ‘must’. The writer’s purpose in writing the paragraph is not to communicate a ‘must.’
Option 3 balances individuals and situational/systemic forces without calling for further explanations or by bringing in any new ideas. The ‘hostile’ and ‘heroic’ arise from ‘ what individuals bring into ...’ .
Hence, the correct answer is option 3. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
