How to Read newspapers, magazines and develop Vocab (Complete guide for developing vo - 17-08-2006, 05:57 PM

Hello,
This is Shalin Jain. I want to appear for CAT 2007 and i am presently in Second Year of B.Com, so cannot go for CAt 2006. As all of us very well know that vocab is an important part of CAT examination, ultimately it also becomes very important about how to prepare vocab. Now by vocab here i dont mean only raw vocab, but as how to deal with the new words which u face while reading books, magazines, newspapers, etc. What method should u adopt to deal with those new words. Now as per my knowledge it is a matter of difficulty for every newbie CAt aspirant about which method they should adopt to learn raw vocab as well as vocab from magazines, books, etc. Some people don't learn vocab, they just read a lot and lot and in this way develop their vocab. So i want that all the senior pagalguy members who are appearing for CAT 2006 or have appeared earlier for CAT should involve themselves in this thread and should help the newbies by giving their views on which different methods they have used till now to develop their vocab and which suits them best. I very well know that some senior members may feel its a ridiculous question but myself being a newbie has always been in a dilemma that which method should i adopt while reading magazines, etc.

Now regarding one more thing. After reading this post upto this, some senior members may be feeling that its a useless thread and i should use the search function. But believe me, I have tried the search function but in vain. Ofcourse there are some posts regarding this but i have noted that hardly 2 or 3 persons reply to those posts and thus it is of no use. So, i have thought of creating a new thread for vocab wherein every newbie visiting this site could easily know how to prepare for vocab rather than searching here and there. I would also like to request the moderators to give their views on this and make this thread going. I feel that there is no reason to close this thread as the moderators may have noticed that this is a thread with a different purpose.

P.S. So lastly, I would like to request each and every member to take part in this thread and give their views on which methods they have adopted till now for learning vocab, reading books, magazines, etc. and which suits them best now and thus help each other.I would also like to tell those members to avoid posting that "Plz use the search function or don't open such threads".

Waiting to see more replies and more enthusiasm.

Regards

Absolutely.... The procedure i use is to read as much as u can.... I am trying to become a voracious reader. Read whatever u get ur hands on bcoz u never know on which topic u would be getting ur comprehension. Besides that i keep babylon dictionary which helps me know the difficult word on the spot. Try to make mnemonics of the word to remember it well with the context.

to develop your vocabulary you start reading newspaper in a loud voice . so that adverbs ,adjectives etc sets into your brain and when you speak it reflects also it helps you in improving in you pronunciation.

i would like that people should reply that suppose if they see a new word while reading something, then do they mug it, or write in a seperate handy book or prepare flash cards. I know very well that reading helps a lot but after reading if u encounter a new word, how to learn it. what method do u use to learn such new words.
I hope everybody is able to understand what i want to say.

while reading..if you come across a new word..either refer a lexicon then and there..otherwise get a vague idea of the word from the context..mark it and continue reading ( in case you are practicing spead reading..you shudn't stop in middle to refer a lexicon...)..but don't mug....Mugging is no help man...

see man..thats enough gyaan..now practice....follow what suit you...first have a suitable vocab base..then do as you like..

But if u don't understand this word, then there's no point in continuing bcoz sometimes, one word holds the key to the complete comprehension.

I practise it sometimes but not very often and it does work !

If you want to improve your vocabulary you need to talk in that language. I personally believe using slang doesnt help in anyway atleast on for instance: forums because thats where you communicate with people and give your ideas and opinions. Consider forums as a teaching class. Picture this: Whenever you visit a topic in a forum you first open that topic, read what people have to say, comprehend it and then you reply accordingly. In this time you might have encountered new words and when that happens simply look up dictionary.com and try using those new words or synonyms in your own sentences. It will not only help you in learning a new word but also practise using that word.

Personally, whenever I encouter a new word I try to understand it from its context or look up dictionary, etc. but then what happens is I tend to forget that very word and only remember it when I read it again.

So most important thing is try using the word that you have learnt.

It helps :satisfie:

hey.....

I completely agree with you @java, the only way to learn and remember new words would be to make it a part of your vocab...:satisfie:
This may be a slight deviation frm the topic, but it would be great if someone could suggest some 'worthwhile' articles /sites .......

Cheers,
Vini
