There are threads on PG for Gizmo Freaks, Windows Haters and Computer problems but there is no thread where all the Geeks of PaGalGuy can discuss the latest happeings in the field of Technology and share our passions. The aim of this thread is to provide a space where we can share and enhance our knowledge of technology and stay abreast with the latest in the field of technology. Please introduce yourself first so that others can find out your "GQ (Geek's Quotient) - The level of madness for technology".
A brief Intro about myself: Been a student of computer science for the last six years, currently doing MBA but the passion for technology is still there as I am specializing in Systems. Learnt host of programming languages ranging from Basic and C to ASP and C#, am a Gizmo freak and like to design s/w for personal use.
What are you waiting for, start posting fellow Geeks! P.S XP Stands for Xtra Pagal, No connection with MyCrowSoft

learn COBOL too the "Business" Language!
btw, i guess there are gizmos threads like which mobile phone, which compter and i remember some threads that even asked for which anti-virus to install ... maybe we couuld have a section on technology, but i wonder how many ppl will accept that, as we already have forums on technology in india like the Digit Forum and techareana but none on CAT until PG surfaced.
cheers

The government on Tuesday launched a Rs 10,000 battery-run computer, the mobile desktop, which is much lighter than the currently available products.
The mobile desktop, Mobilis, and two of its variants – Mobilis Wireless and SofComp, an ultra-compact desktop – were launched by Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal.
The three products would be in the market in three-four months time and would be priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000. The Mobilis, a Linux-based mobile desktop which weighs only 750 gm, is ideal for those who need an inexpensive and dependable computing device for their day-to-day needs, on the desktop or on the move. All have built-in local language support and a choice of everyday applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, personal information manager, e-mail, web browser , PC synchronisation and text-to-speech capability at no extra cost. They do away with the need for electricity.
Mobilis, with a 7.4-inch LCD screen, has a six-hour battery life and touch-screen facility. Mobilis comes with an innovative carry-case that, while ingeniously hiding a full size flexible, roll up keyboard when on the move, opens up as a desktop stand. (Source: Economictimes.com)
The Million dollar question is, Will it work?? A similar product "Simputer" was launched a few years back with a lot of fanfare and I haven't seen it anywhere. Acer also launched cheap notebooks for Students some time back (had a bad appearance, you could even see the fan), and it did not do too well. I wonder how many people will actually buy this ridiculously cheap Laptop . P.S XP Stands for Xtra Pagal, No connection with MyCrowSoft | | | | | | | |

Are players in the Wintel alliance ganging against Apple Computer's iPod in the battle for control of the MP3 business? Seems that way.
Bill Gates has predicted the demise of stand-alone MP3 players like Apple's iPod at the hands of mobile phones that combine functionality and - presumably - run Windows.
To drive home the point, Gates drew a parallel with fight for the corporate desktop between Windows and the Macintosh OS.
"You can make parallels with computers: Apple was very strong in this field before, with its Macintosh and its graphics user interface - like the iPod today, and then lost its position," Gates is quoted as telling leading German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Of course, Gates has an interest in making such statements in the week his company released the latest version of Windows for mobile devices - Windows Mobile 5.0. Launching Windows Mobile 5.0 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Gates claimed 40 handset manufacturers are shipping 68 types of device running Windows.
Gates' comments, though, echo statements by Dell chief executive Kevin Rollins in January. Rollins, whose company's Digital Jukebox is also battling the iPod and whose PCs helped transport Windows to success against Apple on the desktop, was quoted as calling the iPod a passing fad.
There's certainly a lot to play for. JupiterReserach expects six per cent of adults will purchase an iPod during the next year while other manufactures like Dell and Creative Labs are close behind in people's purchasing choices - four per cent expect to buy a hard drive-based model from another manufacturer like Dell. Jupiter expects the total market of MP3 players to reach 56.1 million devices by 2010, up from 16.2 million last year.
And the rot would seem to be setting in on Apple's market share. iPod's is currently around 87.3 per cent of the market, down from a peak of 92%, according to market research firm NPD Group. Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk Will Microsoft be able to topple the leader once again?

I was thinking (for a change), but to no avail (obviously), but this a great new challenge for me, so here goes... "Is there a way to recover data from a hard disk which was not formatted but had an norton ghost image copied on it."
