Hi All,
I wonder if this has happened to anyone else and if so, do you know of a fix for it. (I am using IE6, but I am assuming, possibly incorrectly that this is a Windows XP problem, and though I have had both service packs installed automatically, this was happening before they were installed as well)
The situation:
- You are downloading a large file from the net, you’ve told the save dialog where to save the file and what to call it.
- You go and do something else while it is downloading (like reading and writing *beep* mails
- You are typing merrily away (I happen to be a hunt-and-peck keyboard watching typist, never managed to master typing without looking at the keys) when you catch a flash of a window out of the corner of your eye, just as you type a space or a return.
- It turns out to have been a window progress dialog with a single button that is labeled “Cancel”, which becomes the input focus of the dialog box when it is the active window on the screen. Unfortunately this dialog pops up as the active window on the screen and the main selection keys are space and return.
- “What is in progress?”, you ask yourself. Well it is windows, moving your download from a nonsense temporary name, in a folder you never specified, to the name and location you actually selected. It also seems to me that the larger, more important and difficult to get the file being downloaded, the more this ‘move’ is destructive, i.e. the temporary file is destroyed.
- In fact, while writing this mail, in response to just such a situation having occurred, four more downloads I had started earlier also finished downloading and needed this progress window to tell me about it, however, I only managed to stop myself hitting a selection key three times, :((
I know I am beginning to get into a rant here, but I just want to convey the utter contempt I feel for the idiots who came up with this progress bar with a Cancel button on it.
I mean, you started the download; You named the file and location where you wanted the download to be stored; You not so patiently waited the 30 or 45 or 90, etc. minutes for the download to finish, then it is bloody well terminated and destroyed just as it has completely finished downloading, because windows has to copy the thing to the name and location you specified, because it didn’t download it to that location to begin with.
I mean if you actually didn’t want the download, you simply have to delete it from where you had specified it to be saved.
If they really needed a damned window to tell us how much longer we had to wait to get the file after it was downloaded, they should have done it without that sodding Cancel button.
Sorry about the long rant, so here is my question, as concisely as I can make it
Is there anyway to make windows store the file as what and where you specified it, instead of a temporary file, OR is it possible to get rid of the progress window and let windows quietly finish its business behind the scenes OR at the very least, get rid of that thrice damned sodding “Cancel” button!!!

Ask me, Windows ® sucks, it shows u the seemingly lovely UI and wont let u handle the data. the best i ever liked was 98SE, since then Gates has just played with my urge to handle things myself. Dont u ever feel that the moment u leave ur PC, ur XP starts making all types of indexing to kill the resources?
Am a OSX fan, wish cud buy that now that am joining a Bschool:huh: u see it, the aquafication! & u become a lover . No registry, nothin & u r the king. Windows ® got D&D idea from Mac and did its own ugly autopsy . i love that wallpapers wherein tux is sucking the Windows ® tetrapac

I can recall a lots a guys from my college doing that and praising LINUX without even knowing what LINUX actually is leave alone working on it.

Exactly my sentiments. I've had the priviledge to work on Solaris (loved it) and then I've also used some Linux distros(Redhat, SuSE10.0) at home. At the end of the day, I would still prefer Windows XP for most of the work and use Linux only when I have to show off or when I have to use ..... (all ye ub3r l33t hax0rs got it)
Ofcouse there are some really nice Linux distros out now. Even then they can be a headache for new users. Why the eff will a n00b who uses computer simply to work on Word and a bit of internet want to learn mounting drives when XP runs everything outta the box? How will he know that volume is turned off by default when you install the OS? I had to slog my a$$ for many days just to find out that the sound driver was installed but it was the OS which had set the volume by default to zero when used for the first time. And that setting was hidden somewhere where only devils could reach.
Now getting over to 98 vs XP. All ya XP haters, what's the configuration of your systems? Yes, if it doesnt have enough resources to run XP, then 98 should be good enough for you or move over to some light version of Linux like PuppyLinux. But if one's got a decent enough system to run Windows XP, 98 can bite the a$$ anyday.
I dont even remember the day when I was introducted to computers. I started using XP almost 4 years ago and since that day, there was only 1 time when I lost the data. That too, not because of OS. It was a HDD crash.
Bottomline - It is just like abusing BMW because you like three-pointed star of Mercedes. So get back to work and stop cribbing.

Did you pay Microsoft to use their OS? If yes, contact them and tell about this. If not, then you should be intelligent enough to know the walk-throughs.
Try this:
Mozilla - Home of the Firefox web browser and Thunderbird email client

I never had much problems with windows but been using macintosh for 6 months now( started just out of sheer curiousity..) and only now that im comfortable with it, i can appreciate the advantages and convenience it provides as compared to windows.
