Linux is as easy to get hold of as Windows (Both are available in Nehru Place for Rs 50/- ), but Compatibility is a big issue. The Newer versions are good, but I have had the privellege of working on some Pre-Historic versions of Linux - they even asked you to manually enter the Frequency of your monitor . We had Linux in our curriculum and my system got formatted 3 times because of that Stupid piece of Open source. Latest version of Linux is good but still there are a lot of compatibility problems - your Modem may not work (you will have to write your own Driver to use the Modem ). A large number of Application s/w are available for Linux (like StarOffice from Sun Microsystems which is as good if not better than MS Office), but Windows versions of those s/w are also available. Linux is good, but only if you are a hardcore geek. A normal computer usually has a hard time working on Linux. The Best thing - Get both Linux and Windows installed on your system (At one time I had Windows 98, Windows XP and Red Hat Linux 7 all working at the same time on my PC but I got rid of Linux as my Modem never worked on it )

Windows sucks, but currently Linux sucks more

P.S XP Stands for Xtra Pagal, No connection with MyCrowSoft

Well i too have burned my bum with Linux, but that was 6 yrs ago, i esp got 20GB and reserved 5GB for Linux. Boy it was total hardcore!! its not nice option for a normal user, but have heard that lately it has become lot more luscious. Any body worked on OS X? its lovely as an applepie and gives one a feel of romancing around. latest G5s are bceoming more and more smooth and X is becoming more stable. the visual effects are treat to eyes. the transparent windows that MS is promising as 1st time ever in loghorn, are already up there in Panther (X.3) & moreover the softwares also are now easily available

Nice Discussion we have here .........

Well Ppl all I wanna say is.....wait for Longhorn.Take it from a Microsoftie.......it will blow u away.U really have to see it to believe it.

The only prb is that it may not work on the regular run-of-the -mill home PCs cos of it's h/w requirements which are a lil on the high side.
Longhorn will change the way ppl look at MS operating systems.

Linux,OS X are ok...but..... - 04-05-2005, 11:45 AM

Well its all very easy to bash Microsoft but the fact is that it doesn't have over 90% share in world market for nothing.

Ppl who are having probs with older versions of Win,do try NT based versions like Win 2000,XP etc- they are very stable.

Linux may be free and all but still I feel that MS is overbashed partly due to their own condescending pride..otherwise their products are very good.

Apple , I think is the real innovator with products which could give Redmond a run for its money, but for that to happen theri marketing strategy and positioning would have to change radically.

And as we all know,to take on MS in the PC arena would be something that even giants dread

Ciao and wud love comments!

I agrees with Ankur.I think bashing windows and bill gates is become a sort of fashion symbol for youth :2gunfire: .Some ppl just bash windows coz it is considered "COOL 8-) " to do so specially in IT world(read amature SE).

I can recall a lots a guys from my college doing that and praising LINUX without even knowing what LINUX actually is leave alone working on it.

As far as i am concerned,I think windows is by far the best OS avalable in the market.I just love the ease with which we can do almost everything in windows. To use it properly one doesn't need to take classes or any professional help and can easily master it just by trial and error(read using it).

Yes there are some problems with windows. But then there is nothing in this world which is perfect.Even I have some Grey hairs .

I know the next one line will invite a lotsa hate mail(and some death threats too ;-) )but then also -

I am a windows lover

My $0.02..

I think that without Windows, so many members on this forum would have been a distant dream...

MS is trying to give Apple a run for their money by beefing up the Longhorn graphics....Must say that Longhorn graphics is true eye candy

Havent installed it as of yet but will do so in the near future.
