first of all, how i missed this thread

Anyways, now as PG bhai is right that rather donation we should find some other way which automatically generate revenue for the forum. so let me share my ideas with & tell me whether it is right or not.

first idea is that, there r many free forum server running on the net & u just have to find them. They will take care of the speed & storage & u just concentrate on building ur community. (only two drawback is that there will be very few adds 1 or 2 displayed which not interfere in browsing so not of much importance. second one is that u will not be allowed to backup ur database). Advantage is that there will be full features available & u don;t have to compromise.
If u want to know where is such a forum server located so point @ http://greatboard.com. for eg: u can check my forum. its address is http://getout.greatboard.com(inspired from PG.com) . another advantage is that u dont have to do much of php decoding. They will do it for u.

Now second idea, it is for generation of revenue for PG.com. so suggestion is that a category is made on PG.com for the coaching institutes just like The Lounge etc where coaching institutes can place their adds against some money. there will be no interference & from that the MBA aspirants like us can know better abt the forum & clear our queries abt the coaching institutes. Since we have a high no. of MBA buddies out here, coaching institutes will definitly have some attraction to us.

So how r the two suggestion PG I think both of this can work effectively

the count - err.. very simple - it is at 0 right now. We don't have a bank account - as - after repeated (2) calls to ICICI - they do not want to give me a bank account.

We can proceed with collecting funds into my acccount - I just wanted to keep the proceedings sane - with collection happening into a new account - but - no point waiting any further.

So, those who have sent me a PM will have a account number to transfer funds into - please use internet banking as far as possible - and mention your name(PG.com id) in the transfer details - and also send me a pm confirming the transfer.

Over a longer term, we need to do some analysis of how we can sustain funding for running this portal. I spoke to PG and here are the key points we discussed:
1) It takes a lot of money to run the portal.
2) Donations are unlikely to be able to fund the running of the portal for a long time - we may be able to fund about a month's usage - if we manage to collect Rs 20000.
3) We need to do a brainstorming session to decide on an alternate arrangement to get regular funds - and follow up this session with some actual work.
4) It would be nice to get people with knowledge of phpBB (now we are not on phpBB any more - still it will be good to have people who know phpBB) - such that PG can take some respite from handling the portal and there can be some sharing of workload.


Please continue with any discussion/ideas you may have on this thread.

its a bit late tht i found this thread but i found it alright.

say lots of PGites must be comp.sc engs (like me) so cant we think of pullin in those who are willin to help to share PG's workload? and revenue? almost every other coachin insti in Bhubaneswar(where i come from) suggests, recommends and uses PG for their analysis and words of wisdom. why not let them advertise in banners and pay on a pay for clicks or monthly rental basis?

PG is now widely known to almost everyother MBA aspirant in the country. Coachin instis would give an arm and a leg to advertise for an audience like that. pompous ones might even hold online post exam analysis after tests and all. and schools like BIM, ISBM who send mails to all XAT sitters cud be roped in... the thing is how do we decide what gets done? except for some really nice ideas from peeps all the practical real life works been done by zango bhai.... and collections need to be managed and that gonna require something of a committie of senior members/mods....... We are gonna need PR section peep and the list goes on and on.... hows all that gonna happen??????? buck up peeps

good to see you driving the initiative.
I went thru this thread, the revenue model thread & the next step for PG forums thread almost completely.

Firstly coming to donations thingy. IMHO, not having a separate bank a/c is am impediment. You being a known member around on the boards will not face much issues in driving this initiative using your own personal savings a/c but that may not be the best thing to do in long term.If this initiative gains traction & lots of members donate in, you will be left scurrying segregating your personal txns from the donations. I would request you to get a separate bank a/c (pref a joint one with Allwin) . If ICICI does not oblige, there isnt a dearth of banks in Mumbai.

Secondly, establish some ground rules regarding the donations thingy. Say a min & a max limit.

Infact, imo, not being able to finalise a rev generating model for the boards has been one of community's major failures. All of us have been freeloading & depending on one source to keep this thing running. Very unsustainable. Almost all regular users have benefitted in a way. Without doubt.Payback is long due.

Hoping to see some concrete discussions & consequent action on this front.

this option has been considered - however 2 points of concern here:
1) We do not want this community to become entirely dependent upon the coaching classes and such. It should still be a free-willing community - and not be run depending upon whims&fancies of the coaching classes. We should retain our individuality.
2) Who is going to do the grounds-work? We need people to go and talk to the guys at the centers - get contacts of higher-ups and then talk to them - but not without a good proposal first.

Carpreal - point taken - this (using a personal account) is a stop-gap arrangement - until i have an account - prefer ICICI because of the online transfer (to any bank in 15 cities) and moreover I b elieve people generally have an ICICI bank account - so easier to transfer funds to it.

I am keeping damn damn damn busy atm - so i may not be able to post here regularly - carpreal - please take responsibility of overseeing proceedings - thanks

no zango bhai. this forum can never run on the whims and fancies of the afore mantioned gas bags....... but they can be allowed to sell their services and other stuff like prep material through pay per view/click ads...... and their post exam paid activity can be controlled by the mods cant it be...... PG.com can go far far beyond what it is right now and maybe that can be done by registering this as a society with proper revenue models and a small group of PGites managing it. they can be selected through procedures on PG itself.... is this sound? i have seen strugglin instis (revenue wise) gettin themselves converted as socities which allowed them to hadle revenue intakes rrom large tax free donations to selling services... surely PG can build up an alumni network from bschools to contribute a bit after they land jobs??????? i for one wud gladly do it
