I've started with Teach Yourself Japanese, from the Teach yourself Series(some of you might be familiar with this series). I suppose I do have an advantage, seeing as I spent 3 years of my childhood in Japan, and so am quite familiar with the langauage. I'm good enough to understand fragments of whatever Anime it is enough that I keep watching. So can anyone advise me about what level its safe to reach before puting it on the CV?

Well kudos - Japaneses is a tough language. Whether you want to put in on your CV is based on basically two things:
- Do you want to pass it off as value addition to your job.
- Do you want it to show on your resume.
If you want to add it as something you bring to a job, then you must have a certificate to prove it. My friend did a certification course and reached the third level which is business Japanese. You need a 60% score in each level to pass. After getting said certificate, he managed to land a really good job in Japan.
Now, if you want to show it on your resume by all means add it. But do remember that without a certificate to back it - it would have to be as extracurricular or hobbies.
The golden rule being - the moment you show something as value addition be ready to back it up with a certificate (intangible traits excluded

)
Cheers.
