gr8 link last...really, the article spoke my mind too. high time we admitted this fact and tried to change our mentality. even now, whenever ne white skinned foreigner walks down the street, i see most ppl gaping at him/her and if the foreigner is a black, there is that inevitable joke of "how could they be so dark?". makes me sick. and i think the "fair and lovely" ad is very offensive. i mean y make such an issue of being dark. as if if u r not fair,well, u r nowhere. i know they have also a product to sell, but that shuldn't be at the cost of hurting a lot of ppl.

yes, we definitely gotto learn a lot frm the west. the way they have developed. but doesn't mean that we have to be in awe of them. i completely agree with the point given in another thread that had sonia gandhi been an african, wuld the ppl of india vote for her. see my point is not meant to demean sonia gandhi, but to show this craze for white skin in most indians. high time we changed it!!!

I don't want to get into the Sonia game and politics here, but its really a shame that a white journalist has to open our eyes mentioning that brown too is beautiful.

Seriously, looking at the grassroots of it, we respect white people more than "our owns". Not that we have to shun them, but a lot of us have to understand that they are no better off than Indians. Even yesterday, I saw a white man being given a red carpet hospitality in a shop here, when the sons of our own soil were left to their own. Damn!

Its really shameful that a White journalist has to write this: "Wake up India, brown is beautiful, smart and it is the future. Dr Manmohan Singh, whatever has to be said about the Congress, you have partly redeemed India's pride, and our good wishes are with you." . High time things change.

One other point beautifully mentioned by the author is the Mother Teresa episode. No doubt she and her work is great, saintly, but the Teresa movie has given a nasty, a total impoverised, an empathic feeling on India to the whole world.

Righto! The Fair and lovely ad has to be banned and it should be an example to such products. The product is ok. Poeple who want to use should use it. But the advertisement like a girl gets a spouse if she's white, and not if she's brown is atrocious - to say the least. Its demeaning, fourth-rated, stinking and cheap.

I've heard people fretting so much abt an ad mentionining "If only I had a boy instead of a girl". But how good is the Fair and lovely Ads? I dont see any difference whatsoever.

That was an good article..it was an eye opener but i dont understand the connection with People persisting for Sonia to lead based on her skin colour.That seems too far fetched a statement from reality.The ppl wanted sonia just because she was from the nehru family...i dont see any reason in saying that ppl were enamored by her white skin and hence wanted her to lead..that makes no sense....

but i wudnt really blame the ads of fair and lovely coz they r just reflecting the society's thinking and prejudices and not making thr own statements...

haripri, i feel the sonia fatcor is based on both her "white skin" and the fact that she belongs to the nehru family...
like someone rightly pointed out earlier wud she have been made the congress prez if she was an african???

You don't blame the ads because the soceity is out-dated?
You don't blame the movies for revolving around love-stories since the society wants it?

When does all this change? Who will initiate such things? Does society have an influence over media or the media over the society?? So, did Jeans and Tees, and Western music become popular since society went after it?

It isn't a chicken and egg problem. The media dictates terms and people receive it. You can't expect it to happen the other way around.

of course going by the 'fair and lovely' indian mentality in the first place a person as 'handsome' as rajiv gandhi would never have married an african!! .
but if at all he did I still feel sonia would have been in the same position as she is now...
and the 'obsession' as the author says with 'Mother teresa' because she was white skinned is totally baseless , fallible and politically incorrect...
Mother Teresa is definitely one of the rare ones who dedicated and sacrificed their life for the needy and downrodden,, of course that doesnt mean only 'white skinned' people can be like her..there are so many indians too who have done their bit..take baba amte to mention one...

there r many ppl who worked....., put their lives to the use of society ...but none became as famous as Mother Teresa.....and made a saint....

they made such a hue and cry for that beatification of her.....

itz hype.....i call it hype.....itz a strategy of pope john paul to spread christianity...( no offense meant towards ne religion)....
