I do not know about the USB thing bu the cross over cable is not a complicated thing I feel.
The cable swapped are 1-3 and 2-6.

You need to install home network in both the system. Windows XP does this with minimal efforts. Just right click my computer on your desktop and select the tab "computer name". Click network id button on it.
In the wizard that appears just select the button - this computer is a part of a business network...........
In next window select - my company uses a network without a domain, and press next.

Select a name of work group for both computers and you have done. XP will take care of the rest.

You can normally overclock from the BIOS, but if your CPU is locked, then you need to alter jumpers or use a trick called the lead pencil trick or something like that to unlock the CPU before overclocking. As for the technical details of how it works, i suppose googling should get you a few articles, but to give a simple explanation:

(it doesn't work this way - below is a gross over-simplification of the actual process)...

1. Freq = 1/Time. Or in other words, Freq = no. of instructions in unit time. So, freq of 10 Hz is equivalent to say, 10 instructions being carried out in 1 second (this is real trivialisation of the situation tho!)

2. A processor is dumb and simply does all the calculations that other components tell it to do. Now, processors's are capable of carrying out gazillions of instructions per unit time, BUT it can only do the calculations that are sent to it - for example, if 10 instructions are sent to it every second then it only does these 10 instructions in a second and nothing more, though its capable of carrying out much more per cycle. Instructions are brought to the CPU from different parts by data buses. The data bus which brings work from the RAM, Hard Disks, Video Cards etc to the CPU merges into what is called the Front Side Bus (FSB).

3. CPU Clock speed = FSB freq * CPU multiplier. So, increasing FSB freq will increase clock speed.

3. If FSB freq = 10 Hz (for example), that means 10 instructions from, say the RAM, is carried to the CPU to do. Then, the CPU waits for the next cycle and carries out the next set of 10 instrcutions.

4. Now, if the freq is increased to 12 Hz, then 12 instructions are brought to the processor to do per cycle, and so now 12 instructions are carried out in the same time it earlier took to carry out 10 instructions....and so, increasing FSB freq has increased CPU clock speed and more instructions are being carried out per second, and performance is enhanced!! (or at least, i wished it worked this way...)

Of course, increasing CPU multiplier is also a way to overclock, but that leads to a drop in performance for other reasons...

So i assume 1.47 should be the max clock..... and there is no option to go beyond that...

btw, i notice that my comp goes through lots of problems when i put it on 1.47.... freezes at times, games hang and the whole thing works fine on 1.1... why??
As PC said, possibly the heating is causing it to slow down, though overclocking can also mean that the CPU is running at higher than normal frequencies, and so its not synchronised to receive and carry out instructions in harmony with the RAM,video card, hard disks etc. So, maybe cycle overlaps result in the CPU having to redo some instructions etc....if this is the reason, then the only soln to resolve this is to either overclock your RAM, cards also to the same extent you did your CPU, or to revert back to the original clock speed. Of course, cooling may also be a problem in which case there's a much simpler solution.....

As the Professor said, xp does everything for you!!....in fact, if ure using a simple cross cable to connect two computers then sometimes even the wizard is not necessary...just connect the two, and enable sharing on the respective drives/folders, and transfer away!

Re: Computer queries - 27-04-2007, 05:04 PM

Hi ronticus,
thanks for the details. My CPU can work at 2 speeds (only 2 are available in the BIOS settings), i.e. 1.1 and 1.47. So is 1.47 considered as the clocking speed or the overclocking speed, since it the max speed it can work.

Actually, the settings in the BIOS is like this...

a) 100/100 (both ram working at 100 MHz and CPU at 1.1 GHz)

b) 100/133 (RAM 100MHz and CPU at 1.47)

c) 133/133 (Ram 133 MHz and CPU at 1.47)

I have never tried (b) but (c) definitely increases the temperature and the system hangs often, whereas when (a) is applied, system never hangs and games also work (NFS) but i am unable to utilize the full potential of my processor and Ram

Obviously 1.47 is the overclocked speed.
Isn't there any option to increase clock by increasing FSB freq instead of CPU multiplier? If so, then increasing the former and leaving the latter as it is will be much better.
I'm not sure what the problem is....did u ever manually increase page file size? or is your hard disk nearly full up? these may be related issues. also, is your computer in a relatively cool environment? I don't know dude....if ure computer works best in a particular setting, even if thats theoretically slower, then its best to leave it at that.

I don't think there is any setting to change the FSB freq and the page file is set to 720 Mb (much more than the RAM size). The HDD is partially full and the c drive still has lot of space (how much can a game like mortal kombat need?)

Surprisingly, it works at 1.1 Ghz... As for the temp, i think that could be the possible issue, since the temp. used to go quite high and now i am keeping it with both the sides of the cabinet open.

Another thing was that once my RAM had got tampered and i guess even the slot got some damage, even though it is still working condition. Don't know if that can be a possible cause!

Anyway, thanks a lot for ur help.

Issues with speakers - 04-05-2007, 09:37 AM

Hey guys

One of the many things i use my comp for, is to listen to music.
but offlate i began to notice that whenever i played music in my comp, i can hear more of the music and less of singing, or playing of lead instruments.

Initially i thought this is a problem with my speakers, cause they were giving me some vibration at high volumes, and so i decided to invest in a new set of speakers.

After the suggestion of some Puys here, i bought a creative SBS 2.1 speakers yesterday for 1350/- and to my horror i see that the problem exists with the new speakers too.

Is this something to do with my sound card? or is it some setting that has gone weird.
I have tried adjusting the equaliser in winamp or media player, but it does'nt work.
have any of you encounterd a similar problem?

Try checking in the sound card settings if some alterations have been done to the *karaoke* setting. Its possible that *karaoke* has been turned on which reduces the vocals and some other instruments as you said. Try turning it off.

Well it generally appears as a icon in your task bar depending on the drivers installed Or you can access it through the control panel as well... Mine shows up as a icon in the task bar giving me all the settings and customization I do not need If no external sound drivers are installed then I don't think you will have those settings..

Hi bharat,
try the following. You should install the software (mind you, not drivers) for ur sound card. Eg. My sound card is C-Media and it has a software called 'C-Media 3D configuration' which i downloaded from the internet. U can do the same and do some tweaking with ur settings in the software to adjust the reqd sound. What's ur MB... bcoz sometimes, the s/w might available on the MB's manufacturer's site (eg. My friend has an asus MB and the s/w was downloaded from asus.com)

So just check up the reqd s/w and i am sure, it shud be just a normal tweaking reqd.
