I remember reading somewhere that there is a prog to check the drive speed. Just google it. If the drive is underperforming then i guess u might need to change it.
If u can get ure hands on a frnds 40 gig, try using it and if u get the same prob then it might be an issue with the cable, or might also be compatability issue that the mb only supports so many hdd's, although its probably 1 in a million chance of motherboard compatabilty issues. I have a mb from 2002 and i have connected 3 hdd's, working fine.

Cheers

The trouble is that when ever there is any data transfer from this 40Gb , the system becomes dead slow. It seems that it is taking up the entire CPU for the usuage. I was facing the trouble earlier, but after i formatted my system, it seemed to have resolved. I was told that it might be a hrd drive issue, but i don't think so, as it was resolved earlier.

I can bypass this issue by formatting my system, but want to know if there's anyway i can work out the issue without formatting.

Any kind of suggestion is welcome!
Some trivial thing that everybody knows but still they might be missed sometimes even by experts:
1. Recheck the jumper settings of both HDDs.
2. Connect both the HDDs through saparate cable making both of them masters at primary and secondary IDE and run a disk check. After doing this, check the data transfer speed betn both HDDs.
3. If the problem does not go, then it may mean some serious HDD or MB problem.
4. make the CD drive your primay slave. and check the data transfer speed betn CD and HDD1. if it is some MB problem , data transfer would still be bad betn these two devises.
This way you would be able to zero on the problem area, sorting it out should be difficult for an expert like you. (I mean it. I have read your earlier posts on computers).
Regards
dk

Also, i would like to add....
When you start data transfer, check if you can hear any noise coming.....there should ideally be no sound
Also, don't assume that DMA is implied....check it and make sure that DMA is selected.
Also, don't run other tasks when doing data transfer between disks, since the spindle will take that much longer to read the drive
can't think of netin else

There is no sound... As for the tasks... even then the transfer shouldn't take 10 times the normal transfer time, it takes now.
