Actually, what happens is that the latest versions, all consume, truck loads of memory space, all alike.
As such, I'm using the latest versions of Chrome, FF & IE but IE8 is the slowest browser, i've seen. Opening more than 2-3 tabs at a time, make it almost dead. Chrome, FF & K-Meleon are slightly better.
Yet it does happen that whenever I open a no. of tabs the system starts consuming a lot of virtual memory. I have only 256 MB of physical RAM installed. Moreover, after re-starting the system from hibernation, the system takes a lot of time to become normal & till such time, the browser is very sluggish
