I suggest you use Mozilla Firefox. And you tend to get a lot of security related issues if you visit unsafe sites.

I downloaded an MP3 the other day, and even though the file size is a good 5.5 MB, the file isn't being played on Winamp, or any other MP3 player.
a detailed view of the file, shows the play time as 00:00
can anyone tell me what can be done?

Go through it and try out what they have to say.
