for me social work well

i do social work only when it helps others and it doesnt do harm to me
for example i help people in studies only when it doesnt affect my study schedule.

i think this is a practical approach

even social work is eventually selfish. you help because it makes you feel good...at the end of the day you want to feel happy.

i have been doing some work for AIDS affected...i felt very good about it. i might do more when i am in a position to...but not sure if i'd take it up as the sole activity of my life.

but there are people who will help at their own expense...i guess i can only respect them from a distance.

or like they say, someday i too might be a better person, who knows

Been there, done that!

If you have any desire of helping out the destitutes and the needy, first of all, go out and find some like minded people. It's the most difficult thing to do coz its hard to find people who go outta there way to help others.

But once you have a group - even a tiny one wuold suffice - start pooling in resources. Money, worn out clothes, books, eatables, whatever!

Then find a place where you can donate these things. Do it on a monthly basis.

I was lucky to find such a group in college. We did the work of collecting 30 Rs per month (ntn more, ntn less) from the people in the group. We pooled in the money. We usually had around a 1000 bucks or more after every month.

We used the money to buy stuff for hospital patients, or stationary for municipal schools, etc etc.

Sadly, not doing it anymore becoz of some fricking bureucratic procedures of the college management. Will restart it again once I am done with my college.

That's March 2004.

It has been a satisfying experience so far.

BTW, my group of friends has asb. NO financial gains from this activity. We only lose.

Crazy, isn't it? We still love doing it. :-)

Social Work,

well...i have organised a couple of blood donation camps at college, worked with spastic children, worked with them...done some community work here and there...but nothing real concrete....not spent too much time on this stuff!

if i had the time......(ya i know this seems the best excuse) but seriously, would love to be more involved in this stuff......but somehow.....its never worked out...hopefully i do something worthwhile sometime soon.

All of us do something once in a while that falls under 'social work' but honestly, that one grateful, smile which one gets after u do that li'l favour/help/good turn......is UNMATCHABLE...!!
really.. do try n reach out to someone, anyone who needs a helping hand , and u'll know wat i mean !
