Restrictive Policies in the Workplace - How far can They go? - 14-10-2005, 04:41 AM

Hi All,

You must have heard of some crazy stories about restrictive policies in the workplaces in our so called great IT companies.

Well, this one takes the cake. See for yourself .

Any more such 'Dilbert' stories of wisdom to share?

I remember a friend of mine saying that every email I write to his work address gets read.

I then promptly sent 'incriminating' mail implying he was involved in sending out code and company secrets :-D

ah! And you cry foul because they didnt allow your daily dose of humor? why I thought the work they give you was sufficient enough to make up for it....if not the paycheck at the end of the month ....ah well talking abt "restrictive" policies at the work place I personally know "this guy" whose browsing logs were monitored and access to certain sites (including all the blog sites and even pagalguy.com!) were blocked for his machine!! The ridiculous reason given was.."browsing sites not related to technical issues"...or some such stuff....naturally this person was peeved but ebing of sound mind and body..(actually almost bankrupt) he waited for a month before handing in his resignaiton which much to his chagrin was accepted without a murmur...yes not even a suggestion of "salary hike","reconsider the decision" or as he still laments a parting hug from the new cute HR recruit.... In short it was quite an anticlimax....

But as they say all's well that ends....so he did manage to get into another company but the memory of "corporate" indifference and more importantly his insignificance itself in the larger scheme of things still rankles him..so much so that he is known to post at weird hours.....ah well...

Ya no outgoing email except from the company email .. and no net access at all except at lunch Access to only google through a seperate server apparently.

But I used to work at this place where the only restriction was no porn sites in the open.

Then, those were the days.

Which co. is this? Plz tell me, I can't join a company that blocks access to PG.Com . I had done a project in a company where the users could not upload/download files greater than 2MB, all chat clients were blocked and most popular sites were blocked (but PG.Com wasn't )....thank god the nature of my work (research work which involved heavy downloading activity) provided me with an excuse to get "Free" access.

@anuragxp: Washing dirty linen in public isnt exactly my err...I mean "his" trait... The fact that he was targetted was his love-hate relationship with his tech lead....yes both loved to hate each other....so it was more of an isolated case rather than the norm in the company....but the usual restrictions did hold.... And to the best of my knowledge there were no restricitons regarding gettings hugs from the HR recruits.... Sigh....

Actually looking in the company's perspective it is not really that silly... Security concerns and intellectual property theft is more serious and rampant than you think....lets face it though we might be tempted to think so a lot fo times the companies arent exactly browsing centres ....ergo they are justified in restricting to what they perceive as security threat...one gets irked if an only individual gets targetted!!
