Please tell me the difference between PGDM and MBA. Thanks and keep the candle burning

Dude.. AFAIK its the insti which matters the most nt whether its PGDM PGDBM or whtever... as long as its a top B school its fair enuf... n i guess u get an MBA degree only frm universities the rest of the stand alone B schools offer a PG diploma only.. but they r recognised n widely accepted by all..

there is really a difference between PGDBM and MBA.

1. MBA is a degree course, while
PGDBM is a diploma course.

2. MBA degree is provided by only those institutes that are affiliated to any university.

Eg . JBIMS and FMS, PUMBA. These B-schools are university depts of their respective university.

they follow an academic curriculum as prescribed by the university.

hence these B-Schools give MBA and MMS degrees.

(Note: MMS degrees are the same as MBA degree, the only thing is that Mumbai University gives MMS degrees instead of an MBA.)

3. PGDBM courses are offered by private B-Schools that are not affiliated to any University.

eg. IIM's, XLRI, IIFT, SP Jain.

these institutes prepare their own syllabus, and they are no way dependent on the universities and enjoy full autonomy of their courses.

so B-schools like NMIMS, SP Jain used to provide MMS degrees while they were affiliated to Mumbai University, but now since they have become autonomous , they no longer provide MMS degrees and give PGDBM.

and as far as the reputation of theses courses are concerned, it all depends on the name of the B-School

The biggest advantage of having a PGDM from an IIM (which is a diploma course) is that you can apply to US Bschools (Harvard, Wharton, Columbia, Berkeley etc) after finishing the course and getting some workex...a lot of good bschools in the US consider the PGDM as a great background for entering their program.

If you already had an MBA degree (from whichever college) then you are normally not considered for admission into the top schools...double MBAs are generally not encouraged.

there is no differnce, it is only nomanclature,harvard/whaton people r not so fool that they even know the differece between PGDBM& MBA ,they know it very well, ofcousre i hope u know the diff between rai university & wharton since both r offering MBA degree!!!!

And this eternal truism applies to names of individuals, the companies they work for, their friends, the brands they use,...and yes even the names of the instis and business education programs!
Frankly, placements are one of the parameters to assess an insti. Thought they are not necessarily the best since, admisssions ensure that only the best get to study in the first place!
All that apart, the name is irrelevant. Whats more important is the track record of the insti, whether its the placements, quality of faculty and students, type of jobs(more important than salaries), facilities...etc.,etc..(dont consult ranking editions of business magazines, AC Nielsen had predicted that NDA will come back to power in 2004 elections!)

Dunno if I am right. As far as i believe, MBA is awarded by government controlled universities and institutions. Whereas, PGDM is awarded by institutions controlled privately or by a non government body.

Academically, they both are same n there is not much difference between them. Hope this clarifies your doubt.

hi friend i have been searching on enternet for the same question i learnt many things from others and the reading.
1.mba is a degree and can be given to you by a university
2.auniversity is the institude made by the central and the stste act
3.some could be deemed university
4.there exist a body called university grant commission which use to be of 12 people atleast half of them from educational baground.
5.they worke under the rules and regulatuion of university grant act .they have rules to chec university health standards .they keep a look on the universities and decides grants or fund for them .this whole things what ever happens is made known to the central government .
6.since government is there to provide the funds for them so to look after them .
7.these r the first educational briks of our nation i bet the one who have opened the prvate institude r the post grajuate of any of these universites
8.the institutions which r not taken under theis act and commision cant give degrees hence have to give diploma .
9 you can get easily a government job with the degree.
10.th private institution normally use to have too high fees because they have to pay their expences wholly by themselfs.
11.i havent commented here to say which on is good but rather to increas knoledge of you friends .
