Weekly Plan for CAT 2005 Preparation - 16-04-2005, 10:15 PM

Hi!
A look at PG tells us all what CAT means to the Youth in India. While some make it in one shot others take a few attempts to crack it. All everyone sez is that funda and discipline is most important. Well as far as funda goes PG has a host of threads that take care of that.

Lets do something about the discipline...Let's decide upon a routine and work upon it weekly and post our questions, doubts, etc. We will tackle things on a weekly basis. All of us together! Let us start...I am posting my plans for the first week starting April 17th to April 23.
Anyway, can u agree upon this...
We will set weekly targets on the diff subjects and discuss the developments on this thread.

Ok then for the coming week(17th April to 23th April) we will tackle
Quant:
Time and Distance , Time and Work, SI& CI. That is about 2.5 days per topic. Study the BRM,BSM or whatever u might call it. Solve the exercise.Post if u have doubt. Provide links related to the mentioned topics(within or outside PG)

VA:
Post ur reading speeds.Work hard to improve upon it.
Post links or suggest good reading material.

DI
Finish mugging up tables upto 20 atleast! Fractions, Simple formulae, etc.
Post doubts, links,etc.
Discuss approximation techniques.etc.

Attempt Section tests related to the topics.
At the end of a week we shud have finished all of the above!
we will continue in this fashion with a target of finishing off our Quant by mid June(Hope So!). DI each topic wud be over in three weeks time.

We will handle Grammar next week.

HI!
As far as tables r concerned this software may be of sum help:
http://www.pagalguy.com/cat/attachm...ttachmentid=600

For vedic maths look into http://www.vedicmaths.org
You may even try the attachments.
There is good site on Vedic maths .Try searching in google. It starts with something like vedamu....Sorry forgot the actual name. It is a bit heavy though!
I suggest u need to revise each of the tables fractions , etc atleast twice a day for now to be really good at them.... If u r not. Say once in the morning and once b4 goin to bed. Say when u brush ur teeth.
Make flash cards for tables.Fractions. Little effort will help!
Hope this helps.
Xpecting quick response.
Take care.

hi guys,
i took cat this yr and managed a percentile of 99.57.last time i had started a bit late,so i hadnt mugged up any tables or tried vedic maths.this time im really desperate and wanna aim for a 99.9+ percentile, and i want to know if all this vedic maths and mugging of tables really helps?also how much time will it take 4 me to master vedic maths, and how much speed gain can i expect out of it?also,im gonna join a job in july, after passing out from here in may.so i'll hav 1 full month at my disposal whn i'll b free to prepare, after tht i might get a lil busy.ne1 in a situation similar to mine, lemme know ur plans!im planning to mug up some grammar book, mayb wren and martin or sumthn, complete word power made easy for vocabs, and how to read better and faster, coz i feel va/rc is the most scoring section and once i regularly strt scoring above 30 in it,it will stand me in good stead!

Well interesting thread...

I havent started preparing as yet. But I just wrote the CAT 2004 to see where i was. I am shocked... could only manage 38. I thought Quant was my strength. Went for two mark questions only... I scored a 7!! Ofcourse i havent touched a math book for the last 5 years... Whoa... its gonna be complicated...
I now hope prep can bring scores up...
Any CAT crackers can tell me strategies for the RC. Do you go for all the 4-5 RC passages or select 3...

Anyone has a 3-5 page document with all the important math theorems and formulae that very CAT specific...

If CATchamps can keep sprinkling bits and pieces of advice and general strategies here on this thread, that will be helpful...

i can advise regarding RC.only practice is gonna help u in increasing ur reading speed.me is also gonna try "how to read better and faster" by norman lewis,i hav heard its good.asu build up ur speed,u can try attempting more and more passages in the mock tests.and just like in other questions,u shud attempt the easiest passage first.regarding the toughness of a passage, there r 3 things u shud look for
1.the ratio (no. of questions)/length of the passage
2.ur familiarity wid the topic that passage deals with.
3.the type of questions at the end of the passage...inferential questions r dangerous, go for the passage having factual questions first.
as to the number of passages to be attempted,it depends.i cud attempt 3 this time, and one of them amounted to zero marks for me,so effectively it was 2 passages for me.got 96.xx percentile in that section, enuff to clear the cutoffs but nothing gr8.

K
and yaa...38 was a gr8 score for a first attempt!
as u start taking tests, try to increase the no. of attempts by trying a mixture of approximation and educated guessing, accuracy will automatically follow after sometime.ATB to everyone, may all of us be packing our bags for A/B/C next year at the same time!

VA is mainly RC i think... Get the easy questions out of the way and then head for RC if you are really good.
2004's cutoff was 52. Atleast thats what i know. I think i have a longer way to go than i had thought initially... The Q section is designed for 4th year eng students... I pity non engineers and workex dudes (like me...)

I doubt IIM A will ever seriously ranked in the top 30 in the world if they keep stuffing half the class with guys without workex, With 75%+ engineers that too, Their teaching methodology is copied from HBS case based... That is a serious error... HBS invented casebased learning but keeps the avg workex around 5 years with fresh grads less than 10%... I doubt if half copying will work in the long run... Ah i am just ranting...
