Hi!

hi guys,
i took cat this yr and managed a percentile of 99.57.last time i had started a bit late,so i hadnt mugged up any tables or tried vedic maths.this time im really desperate and wanna aim for a 99.9+ percentile, and i want to know if all this vedic maths and mugging of tables really helps?also how much time will it take 4 me to master vedic maths, and how much speed gain can i expect out of it?

GOD! U r GOD to me! U started late, Hadn’t mugged up tables and yet notched a 99.57 pctle!!! Boss, If u can really mug up tables then I believe nothing …absolutely nothing can stop u from making it to 99.99999 !
Can u give me some tips as to how u went about doing it last time so that we can accommodate some stuff on our Weekly Plans as well! What was ur SCORE btw?
As far as vedic maths is concerned it needs u to change the way u do ur maths. There r 16 sutras (possibly) and it is a bit difficult to get used to all of them especially if u r short of time. Try the simpler ones. They will surely help.

DesiGuru wrote:
Anyone has a 3-5 page document with all the important math theorems and formulae that very CAT specific...

Well, I am trying to attach a file check it out. It has been picked up from PG itself. I forgot the thread so I attach it once again.

DesiGuru wrote
If CATchamps can keep sprinkling bits and pieces of advice and general strategies here on this thread, that will be helpful.
That is what we intend to do and so do I join u to pray to the “CATchamps” to do what u said. But yes, Don’t forget the old and wonderful threads already on PG with suggestions! Will try to give u the links at one place here sometime later.

Catafix wrote:
I am going to use your weekly plan as my intial start up...then will follow with the IMS schedule for CAT.

Hey, u do help us out with ur IMS schedule if that does not bother u much. I am a novice as far as schedule making is concerned and expert help is solicited!

Great! That will be simply great! I believe if all the cities come together then CAT prep will be a lot better. Coz that way a mumbaite will be able to share with a b’lorian and a chennaite will be able to share tips with a kolkatan!
For reading speed try rocketreader software. Try searching on Google. It is a shareware 14 days usage free. After that? Wicked ones use their brains!

Try these link for some extra questions ...pretty simple though!http://www.ascenteducation.com/india-mba/iim/cat/questionbank/speed.shtml

http://www.ascenteducation.com/india-mba/iim/cat/questionbank/worktime.shtml

Quite a few MAD ppl out here it seems! (Real mad and maddy 420)Neways! as far as starting off wid SIMCats r concerned..these ppl must be real good..they have finished wid their funda prepn and so r aiming at SIMCATS. What i suggest is take 1 diagnostic test and do a little SWOT analysis and then start prepn and leave the SIMCATS till ...maybe JUNE. as far as sol key is concerned .. I am not sure.
Take care!

lol!!!im no GOD...belv me...its NOT that essential to mug up tables!in fact, not having to remember nething lets ur brain free and its much more responsive to new ideas that way.but then, wid this style of solving problems,u always tend to reach that stagnation point after which its very hard to improve ne further...and it depends on the individual when he reaches that stagnation point.
newayss...coming to preparation,i wud suggest u to try taking a 3-4 tests without any preparation whatsoever.that ways,u'll come to know of ur natural strong points and weak points...and devote equal time to every sectionafter that, first .start focussing on ur weak points more, ofcourse while consolidating ur strong pointslike in my case,im gonna focus on the VA/RC part..and as i said earlier, try to consciously increase the no. of attempts u make in each mock u take, accuracy will automatically follow.ATB!

Lets do something about the discipline...Let's decide upon a routine and work upon it weekly and post our questions, doubts, etc. We will tackle things on a weekly basis. All of us together! Let us start...I am posting my plans for the first week starting April 17th to April 23.
Anyway, can u agree upon this...
We will set weekly targets on the diff subjects and discuss the developments on this thread.

Ok then for the coming week(17th April to 23th April) we will tackle
Quant:
Time and Distance , Time and Work, SI& CI. That is about 2.5 days per topic. Study the BRM,BSM or whatever u might call it. Solve the exercise.Post if u have doubt. Provide links related to the mentioned topics(within or outside PG)

VA:
Post ur reading speeds.Work hard to improve upon it.
Post links or suggest good reading material.

DI
Finish mugging up tables upto 20 atleast! Fractions, Simple formulae, etc.
Post doubts, links,etc.
Discuss approximation techniques.etc.

Attempt Section tests related to the topics.
At the end of a week we shud have finished all of the above!
we will continue in this fashion with a target of finishing off our Quant by mid June(Hope So!). DI each topic wud be over in three weeks time.

We will handle Grammar next week.
Hey before actually jumping to start. Lets form a group and discuss a suitable stratagy that suits us all.See am in my final year of engineering ...wat about u all...
Am thinking of starting my prep once again ..(This year cat was a big blow!!). Then i got my joining at Infy on 10th october 2005. So i have to be prpared for that in advace. So can't we all have a bit of inroduction about our stratagies n then formulate one that suits all of us!!.
Plz post ur opinion.

Quite OK. But since we cannot afford to lose out time. U start off wid ur suggestions straightaway. I am inviting others as well. But let us limit this to the coming week. Or else we will start losing time only doing planning and no real work.

Thanx 4 the suggestion! Well basically I hav a fair idea about my weaknesses. For istances the probability and P&C. Now should I leave that out completely or try working on it with double efforts? Considering the fact that there r other chapters as well where I do not enjoy the ease of solving probs!
Take care!

Hi!! - 17-04-2005, 08:27 AM

Hi Ninja!!!
Sorry couldn't follow up PG for a week .I think its a great effort on your part and this time you have my full cooperation.
I'll share with u guys a few things I've picked up while surfing the net-
ENGLISH- one of the best way to i9mprove vocab is to read editorials of atleast 2 newspapers daily. Now the question is HOW DOES ONE READ EFFECTIVELY?

1]Read the editorial without stopping and note your reading speed.
2]read it the second time and this time stop and find out the meaning of unknown words.
3]write down the words in a book of yours and make sentences with them. This will help u remember them .Try to use the words on a daily basis .Look up all the words once a week.
4] write down the jest of the editorial in a book thios will help u for RC, Forming opinions and for GD/PI.Write the jest in 4-5 lines.

I've tried it and it works.

More funda's later...

Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing.

Hie!

well.... sounds like a long way to go for this thread! can help us leaps n bounds if properly utilised rather than spending time in the chit chat lounge!!

well.... firstly.. i m final yr engg grad... n have my exams lined up next month... at the moment .... have our submissions and vivas in a fortnight. so.... cant do any serious preps for atleast a month n a half from now on. so....

for me this week.... just gonna complete "jeeves and the feudal spirit" - P. G. Wodehouse. welll... while reading.... i concentrate more on comprehending while reading ... rather than being too concerned about speed.... dat doesnt mean i m a slow reader! coz.... y i do this is... in CAT these past cuppla years.... its been a more inferential based Qs.... so its very imp to understand wat u r reading.!

well.... and haan.... i underline the new words i cum across while reading.... and then after i m through with a cuppla chapters.. or rahter 1 hour of reading... i chek up the meanings in the dictionary ... r on www.dictionary.com ... and note those words down in a notepad. then.... theres my ready recknor!!

hmm.... n ya.... after the wodehouse iis done... will start with alchemist... so reading n only reading for me for a month or so!

well.... lemme know... how u found my prep strategy... n plss do suggest any modifications or suggestions u feel.... its open t criticism as well!

chaO!
