Hi - 04-01-2005, 03:29 PM

I second koseram.....

In this post globalisation era...there are a no. of such avenues available in which one can succeed....so...a person just out of school or college is in a real dilemma as to which course to adopt..In such situations...he takes up a course that he thinks or peers advise him that it is the best .....In such an environment...ppl are looking for avenues which they can take up...develop interest in it out of nowhere and then become successful....I think IIMs are the best place for that......

asif somehow seemed very clear to me, in what he was trying to express. I'll add a few more cliched arguments which I believe have not yet appeared on this thread, but are logical extensions of asif's suggestions.
It's my gut feeling that job satisfaction is much more important than anything else.
A necessary attribute for any job has to be your passion for it. An MBA for any other reason, or for that matter, any course you take without this reason is bound to leave you unsatisfied a few years down the line. You may get a lot of money and power etc., but the basic job satisfaction will simply not be there.
Any decision to swap the field of your liking with something else should be made after a lot of thought. I am totally into computers, but have a ****ed-up GPA and have a job offer from TCS alone at this point of time. Just because I land a job at TCS and may run the risk of becoming a vegetable 2 years down the line, does not mean that better prospects may not be available later on. The possibilities need to carefully evaluated. And if possible, such a tradeoff is way better than taking up something which you clearly lack interest in. But somehow, such long-sightedness almost always eludes us.
Many actually want to take a high-paying job, work their butts off for 5-6 years, hoard a lot of money and then retire. But, Iam not sure, how easily will we be able to simply retire. As more money comes in, one's lifestyle also changes and the money required for maintaining it increases. The amount earned in 5-6 years may suddenly start seeming like a paltry sum, and then you decide to work just a few more years, and it goes on and on.

koseram writes: "....basically it is a kind of self-realisation course which u do to justify ur
talents and moreover your life "
What you are passionate about may not harness your best talents (and hence fail to justify your main strengths). We are not some kind of machines to be utilized for exactly our strongest points.

i gave CAT just to keep my options open, and have kinda post-poned the decision-making part.

Men always act rationally, once they have tried out the other options.

a very thought provoking arguement.good talk.
am doing my final yr B.E..am not interested in technical line.i want to do my MBA in IIM(only )
am sure that i will hv the IIM tag after my name in a couple of years.
am from Hyderabad.i want to work for couple of years before my MBA.most important reason is,as not being an IITian or NITian,i feel i wont be able to get into IIM as afresher, eventhough am the CAT topper & perform well in GD & int.
while working i will be preparing for CAT & give a shot next year.if unsuccessful, again the next year until i get into IIM.
i want you guys to tell me what kind of job i should go for in the next 2 to 3 years which would be a plus point for my MBA in IIM & also form a good foundation for a management career ahead.
pls tell me.........

Definitely agree with the fact that MBA broadens the scope for career advancement. After having worked in IT, I am now making B-Plans for a mgmt consultancy (summer internship). Needless to say that it's damn exciting and challenging and something which would have been very difficult without an MBA. However, do not agree that one needs to wait for the IIM's to jump onto the MBA bandwagon. It all depends on your interest. One of my friends did his BTech from IIT Kanpur and and has been working for Microsoft,Seattle for last 6 yrs.
Now he wants to come back(to India) but wants a technical role as he enjoys that and has no intention of changing his track. This is after he had admits from couple of tier-1 BSchools in US.
But if you are not clear about your likings/dislikings then I guess,"kyonki papa ne kaha tha" waala reason is OK for doing an MBA as it would do only good to your career.
But look for BSchools beyond IIM's as well ..have loads of friends who sacrificed yr after yr for an IIM admit..at the end got into 2-rung BSchools and are doing great now.
Maybe it's not really worth so much .
IIM tags are good to have but are not the only one's available.

I think most of u missed the most important reason. This may seem trivial but i think that many ppl go for an mba when they dont get jobs fresh out of college(atleast in india).I had friends who went for an mba because they cudnt land jobs after engg. college...They might not hv neccessrily got into an IIM but most did get into good b-grade institutes...and i believe most ppl wudnt go for an mba if there were good tech jobs available...as ppl who had joined engg colleges obviously did so because they were intersted in the tech scene(never mind how tracks change later)...I still dont think ppl go to engg. colleges as a stepping stone to an mba... though i had a classmate who did just that..said he was planning for an iim right after class 12 and figured out an engg. degree gives him a good chance for an IIM call...but i hope such wierd dudes are in a minority...

PS:the weird classmate did go on to pass out frm IIMB....
