Actually there are two issues
1) Discrepancy between expected and actual scores
2) Getting calls from IIMs
I think you are mixing these two. The CAT bulletin clearly indicates that the different IIMs consider different CAT questions for giving a call to the candidates.
So if your friend got 99.89%tile, but when IIMs would have considered the scores by removing some of answers, then he might have been below cutoff(a lowered individual cut-off of various IIMs) in some or the other section, while with a 99.10%tile, even after removing some of the answers he may have cleared the cut-off. All this depends on which questions you answered and which one IIMs remove. This might explain the confusion regarding calls....IIMs do not consider absolute final percentile alone while giving out calls.
While what I want to know from you ppl, is about such a vast discrepancy between actual and expected scores. What could have gone wrong?
