Re: CAT cut offs for work ex - 30-11-2004, 06:21 PM

Thanks for the post Mike . I had one quick question here . We have been talking about the "progressive relaxations for the work ex" guys here . Any idea what is the approx relaxation we can expect for a 4 year work ex guy.

Some one was quoting in this forum that work ex or no work ex they do not issue any calls below 98 % . Is it true ?

As for me I guess I might clear the individual cut offfs but my overall %ile may go for a toss(my mistake- didnt try to maximize in my strong area instead went to clear cut offs in all three).

So was wondering , what my sitiuation wud be like ?

hey mikey... good stuff dude... clears a lot of things..
n thx 2 u i hv decided 2 give CAT agin nxt yr (was dropping the idea)
btw can u tell me does exp really matter??
like these days 90% of the ppl applyin 2 IIMs with work-ex are in software.. a major chunk of which r workin in either TCS Infy or Wipro so unless n untill we hv some extremely good profile how does it matter 2 the IIMs..
n look at Arun if SPJ can reject a person with 98%ile n 5 yrs of work-ex this puts a big ? on the "Work Ex matters a lot" statement
but then u shd know better y dont u explain a li'l more clearly..

cheers

That was me!

and I still think I am correct. *People wil *always talk about *some friends' friend who got a call at 95-96 %ile, in my opinion such instances are an exception to the rule and not the rule itself. Merely having a few years experience is not good enuff. *There has to be something special abt you. If you have some kind of reservation then probably you can expect a call with 90%ile also.

I am speaking this from my personal experience of last couple of years but I really hope I m proven wrong this time.

Re: CAT cut offs for work ex - 30-11-2004, 08:30 PM

OK. Here goes.

1. No calls below 98%ile is pure BS!!! Allwin (PG) had a call at 96.8 and LOADS of people had a similar tale last year.....

2. About progressive relaxation, well, I can't say how much relaxation. It's a lot to do with the fact that a lot of people are not too open about precentiles even after getting through. It's almost like a lower percentile would detract from their achievements....

3. There are guys here who have tons of ex. One chap here is 33, he's an SDM. And he's not alone. Guys with 3-5 years of exp are not hard to find...and they do have lower %iles than the rest.

4. As far as SPJ is concerned, that institute is totally arbit. I know guys who landed a BLACKI last year with 3 years ex and didn't get calls from SPJ. Nor did I, for the record. However, every single person who submitted their application forms to SPJ before the aborted CAT got calls. I am yet to meet a single person who got a call after submitting the form post-CAT......

5. As far as type (relevance) of workex is concerned, it does not come into play at the beginning like I said. That comes up in the interviews. Like for me, being in a Marketing job for 2 years made my SoP the easiest thing in the world. It was so logical....I was in Marketing, and now I wanted to do an MBA to be more complete....

Chocabloc, if I were you, I'd relax. See, if you are confi about clearing the so-called sectional cutoffs as predicted by the institutes, well, then I think you have a pretty good chance of clearing it overall......chill out....

Cheers!
Mike

I can give an authentic reply to this one. I got a call from IIM-K last year with 97.45 percentile. My work ex then was 2.5 years. Some of my colleagues with < 2 years work ex and percentile of 98.0 did not get any calls.

And as far as the claims of people getting calls with 94 percentile, one should question whether one is talking of general category or reserved category. As you know around 25 % of the seats are reserved for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The cutoff for this category would be lesser. Mine was generatl category.

Welll Mike,

Very informative post.

But then, the scenario gets more confusing.
Its like being in the BHUL- BHULAIYA - lots of doors alround you - no one knows, whcih one is the correct one

Whatever the criteria, I just wsh I get a few calls.

Sanchayan.
