Small paragraph followed by a single question....type of questions..strategy? - 05-11-2004, 11:29 PM

in EU part we have questions like *

Q ) *In this.................
..............................paragh over

what can be inferred /concluded/assumed/odd one etc

* * * *i have started attempting these type of questions * but i get all wrong
its always comes down to choice between 2 answers *and always the one i didn't choose is right..
and also its confusing like... inferred concluded or assumed...
should one leave these questions...or any particular strategy

If VA and RC are in the same section, I would strongly advise you to keep it as such questions as your last resort. I too end up guessing between 2 choices and guessing is too risky on the D-Day.

Besides, im sure you can attempt 3-4 RC and the rest of verbal and this itself will take your attempts tally to 35-40. I would also suggest you to try parajumbles ahead of this. I've been working on PJs for a week now and I see my accuracy improving steadily. I suggest you do the same.

thanks..i was asctually apprenhensive about these Qs....
By the how are u improving ur accuracy in paraghjumbles...practicing all of them ..that came across in all the mocks u gave.......

and abt keeping the questions as the last options ..but i have seen some mocks without any EU vocab based Qs....should then i switch onto this..

I worked on PJs. Did quite a few of them from CRTs and prev mocks. I dont attempt all of them. Look at the choices first and then read the sentences. It makes a huge difference to the way you read the sentences.

If you dont have many verbal ques, I guess you'll have to take a shot at the summary-type ques. But I would suggest you do more RCs in such cases.

One query...one of the faculty member told me that theris a cut off seperately in Eu and Rc question
means i have to in any case attempt minimum EU questions...??

Also a guy from IIM L told me that u have higher negative marking for EU questions and lower for RC..
are all these notions corrext?

You get them wrong 'cause you don't know what they are. They are to test your reasoning power rather than verbal skills. They are known as Critical Reasoning (or CR in GMAT jargon)

They are quite easy and if they come in verbal section people who skip them will be at competitive disadvantage, 'cause most of you will be leaving 5 inappropriate usage questions, plus the general accuracy in verbal is low. RCs were easy last year but in 2001 and 2002 they were very ambiguous.

Given this, it is not at a wise decision to leave CRs provided they make a comeback

How to prepare?

1/ GMAT guides

2/ online: just google "Critical Reasoning"

Enjoy!!

only if they r split into 2 different sections do u hav 2 separate cutoffs... there's nothin like cutoffs within a section....

this cud b true... cos iim's dont reveal their negative marking formulae or watever they call them... so its quite possible...

hey..

this is the type of question i hate...IMS calls it critical reasoning...also the kind where u have to get the best essence of the text...

best to leave these qstns last if VA/RC are combined...but if too many are there (eg Simcat 4)...then i think one shud go for at least some...

but mind u..dont let them break ur speed...

hey....
you can have a look at the CR psgs while in the EU section and attempt one if you find it easy or direct...you can keep the rest for last few minutes of your english section....if you attempt RCs after Eu, most of the times there ll be a couple of minutes left at the end...you can utilize this time to do atleast 2 CRs.....
but ya....like PJs, practice is a must for CRs..and it does work wonders there too

misha is right do not leave all atleast attempt one or 2 questions in "CR". my accuracy is almost 95%+ in these questions. the key is practise. daily do lots of questions. in CAT 1998 there was abt 8 CR's and first one was very typical. And as u know we always start with first question so many students after seeing first just skipped rest of questions and there was around 5 questins which were straight forward and managable. so key is practise practise practise

byeeeee
