companies folks are usually more intent on running away from software than ppl working in products companies.

Now you are waiting for someone to ask "why?".
"Why?"
Let me tell you why. People in service companies by and large do only maintenance projects. ie the code has already been written long before(sometimes back in the 1960s) and it has to MAINTAINED and needs any ENHANCEMENTS to it. So one only does what the client wants. Like say the client needs to increase his suppliers and if those suppliers are being stored in a table then you would just increase the size of the table- now this is a very simplistic example, but this is what happens with some degree of variation in SERVICES companies.

Now coming to product companies - you have to create, anticipate and develop applications FROM SCRATCH for normal everyday people which definitely requires one to be uh...u get the picture don't u?

i work in a service co...
am workin' on dis product...
dat has abt 90million lines of code...
n we do da enhancements n fix bugs...

da kind of analysis required to even change one goddam flag is crazy...
da mental effort is pretty much da same as developing "applications FROM SCRATCH "...
u need to be creative 2 find where best a certain part of code needs to be fixed....
u need to anticipate da errors dat could occur n how it could affect da 90 million existing lines....
n u sometimes need to develop new functionalities to be added into da existing product....

...n it too requires one to be uh...hope u get da pic

ps--all i'm tryin' 2 say is maintenance projects r not as ewwww as ppl make it out 2 be

When was the last time you heard anyone from say HP doing work from "scratch" ? It is an invalid assumption to say product based companies everyone works from scratch. Here in Wipro (100% service company), we have a lot of teams working from scratch though.

At least software engineers are better tha BCOM(Read BE KAAM)people for which main purpose of doing mba is getting a job,
otherwise they will remain enemplyed.
i dont want tos ound rude but this is reality.
ask bcom .ba etc people how many of them have job
and how many can hope to get without an mba
management is about innate qualities in a person
which are groomed by doing mba.
so this concept of bcom or software engineer is crap.
insted of criibing try hard people .

Hey whoever told you that people start from scratch.....nobody does that.....every project has some amount of reusage...even a new one trust me....and it is a misconception that managerial work doesnt have any of that stuff.obviously there are certain aspects of a successful strategy you are going to incorporate in your new one...even if you are determined to formulate a new one on your own...your superior would dismiss it as mere enthusiasm lacking pragmatism....so that in any chance could not be a reason against s/w professionals...

I always wonder, why on earth people won't read first few posts, of the thread, some middle posts and then answer or post their thoughts.....

now see this...

The thread started with a good subject line and is dragged into ........ well a different argument.... [service vs. product].... hmmm What happend to MBA for S/W

Please folks, I'm no authority to say so.. ....... But the thread has a different identity when started, If we continue that identity, it'll be so much ......... ...........say ........... useful .....

Dhanku !!!

I'm what I'm.

Software to MBA ? - 25-01-2005, 11:31 PM

read all the msgs on MBA after s/w

Being a s/w engineer myself... I feel that the sort of workex most of us manage to get in Indian sw firms is not too relevant. ..ie most of us only get to do coding...scripting...testing etc etc...Nothing really techno...

Most of us (s/w pros) aspire for MBAs only cuz we feel that it would MAJORly improve our paycheck (which may not necessarily be true for someone who has been working for 3-5 years in a good s/w company...these guys must be earning well anyway)...
Some of us also take it up as a route out from coding or programming (which some of us view as frustrating)..
For some of us doin MBA is also an issue of prestige or "getting the MBA tag"

MBA is meant to give all of us a new viewpoint on the industry we are working in...and for this purpose the s/w industry is as good as any other.

easier typed than said....easier said than done

Software guys moving into MBA..... - 26-01-2005, 12:32 AM

Hellooo guys,This is my second post. I have been reading the posts for the last one year But never tot of posting one..But then after writing all the exams possible on earth here I am to discuss::

Here there are two different set of people who would like to do MBA.....
One who are having the industy exposure
and the others are fresher or graduates.

When you consider the people who are already having industrial explosure want to do MBA again for two set of reasons

1.When they want to start their own Entreprenuership.
2.Or to get rid of the pain of working under the boss.

So there are no problem of these guys doing MBA I guess.
The main issue here we are dealing with is "the graduate guys doing MBA:-

First let us consider the issue irrespective degree(B.tech,B.e,B.com.......)

The main reasons for these guys choosing MBA field are as follows:

1.they want their life to be settled in the earier stage of theirs.
2.They want high paid jobs.

But actually they really dont know the intricacies involved in doing MBA.And they are not so sure of what they are going to study specifically. But they DO HAVE DREAM of BECOMING A MANAGING DIRECTOR OF some company. This implies to both B.Com as well as Software graduates(Engineers).....

In the modern epic, where the world is moving to the globalisation large number of companies will be depending upon the computer technologies. So the companies who are offering the jobs to freshers in the large percentage are SOFTWARE COMPANIES.

So they prefer a SOFTWARE guy who did MBA than normal B.com guy with MBS who is only restricted to his domain as a MANAGER or for top level posts. And ,more over the guy from B.com in his graduation wont learn the real world scenarios than Software guy who did his Engineering.

If would have to choose between B.com with MBA or Engg with MBA I would definitely choose Engg with MBA.

Finally..All the people who do their MBA from prestigious institutes irrespective of graduation are dilligent and intelligent without which they woouldn't be clearing the tests......

Mannnnnnnnnn........... think atleast 2years in advance.....You will get what you want.....(Just kidding.....)

My take on S/W Engg.. - 26-01-2005, 01:09 AM

hey,
Tomm being republic day, got some time to share my views on this one. In 3 yrs (my current experience), few of the IT professionals gain technical knowledge and many among us improve our project management skills (Irrespective of it being a service or a scratch level requirement).
Money would not be the criteria in most cases, coz an IT pro now earns roughly 3.5 to 4.5 lacs (after 3 yrs) also an assured 11 months (L1) to 24 months (H1) trip. The problem is most of us S/w pros aspiring for an MBA, do not get an oppurtunity to explore our true potentials. And there is always the fear of "BEING" like "EVERYONE" else. We all want to Stand Out and Hence desire to make a difference or a Significant Contribution in any fields (HR/Finance/Systems/Mktg/Operations) anything. Also currently the ROLE definition of an IT pro is very poor. In 3 yrs one ends up doing a Large chunk of ones Module Leaders Job, which is not what the role/pay/designation demands. yet you have to slog it out, since one is expected to play mutliple roles of Guide/Sub-Lead.

It demands a huge sacrifice to Quit once HIGH-PAYING Job and Onsite oppurtunity to go "BACK TO SCHOOL" and study with guys/ gals 3 to 4 years junior. Yet we do it, coz that would keep us Motivated and Ticking in the long run.
I opine that "It is Beyond money...it is more about a Definition of Role, Maximum utilisation of Ones potential and an Oppurtunity to learn more domains (other than our current healthcare/insurance/credit card projects) which motivate AMBITIOUS S/W pros like us to study further.

Thats my take on it..... JAI HIND!!!

-Anoop.
The choice I make today will determine what I will be tomorrow.

my view - 26-01-2005, 01:46 AM

good topic..pretty much reflets my current situation..i have been working in a s/w mnc for the past one and half years..being a comp. science graduate , i was vexed when i was put in a maintenance project..i thought..hell with this job..and i started preparing for cat..one fine day in last October(just one month before cat..i got an onsite chance.) onsite means a LOT of money..not even a high profile job from mba can assure u that...i had to take a tough decision of quitting cat preparation as i have to fulfil many financial obligations...recently i came to US...and i might stay for at least 6 months..but i will definitely give cat/gmat this year or next year...if u ask me the reason why..it is definetely not money(as i already said...u can earn a lot more money staying in onsite..infact there are people in our project who have stayed in onsite for 5 years and 7 years and have two or three houses back in india..so u can imagine how much they earned).
the reason is..as someone already pointed out.."i want to be considered as a cut above the rest"..cracking cat and studying in an iim is adding more brand value to yourself(of course..this brand will not matter much 5 years down the line)...but if you stay in this s/w field..you will not be carrying any brand and will eventually end up as some lead in the middle-level management..

Fate...it seems...is not without a sense of irony
