dad`s business over tech job - 15-06-2004, 02:08 AM

Pretty sure many wud`ve come across this question enroute to an MBA

This is the scene:

Dad has an established business and moi a s/w engg. fresher with a job at infy and planning to take a shot at CAT for the second time. Although the company doesnt matter its whether i can bypass a tech job , start off with dad and claim experience in the interview of a b-school. Few points for opting for business being flexible timings n less workload initially to prepare for CAT as i couldnt do much the first time and inclination towards it as against a tech. job.

Now the MBA is not for entrepreneurship ,more for a job later ..only that at that time it wont be techie cos i wont be takin such a course anyway,no option for a systems specialisation for me
Few q`s to begin with:

a) The exp. in business maybe valid but does it have relevance in the eyes of the panel at an i`view?

b) Is it that diff. to start looking for a job again if a need arises

c) How important is a job experience as against an experience in business for just the interview sake

d) A high percentage of people with work-ex in a b-school are salaried employees. is it that people avoid business even if they have a chance n if so y?

please pour in with your views

I guess it depends on what you want to do after MBA. I mean, if you are planning to jump inot Systems, forget dad's business. Dad would do a better job. On the other hand, if you are planning to jump into business or start a new business etc, it would be of real help.

On similar lines, if, say, you work in the marketing part of Dad's job... and you are planning to take marketing as specialization, again it would help.

In simple terms, make sure that you pick the relevant field of work... my 2 pence.

thx for the rep. govar

The situation is a bit different though. Now i`m not taking Systems for sure as m not inclined towards a technical related job. Secondly I would prefer a job for atleast a few years say 3-4 before starting or joining business after an MBA

Now the main question is if experience in a family owned business really taken as a good exp. in the pi after CAT. I mean how do they view this experience vis-a-vis a professional job, will it put a negative mark?
Will a job carry more wieght over it??

I`m inclined towards working with dad rather the job in the run-up to CAT this year due to many reasons ,but again after an MBA go for a non-techie job for quite some time before considering self-employment.

Soundin too fussy?? ..but thts the situation

Well...
I had workex of family business and that didnt turn out to be interesting enuf for the panel coz they didnt ask much about it..
But it surely counts .. (The NMIMS ppl gave me marks for my workex...)
How much depends upon the panel and they way u r able to present it..
Explaining it to them that u r really interested for an MBA and u r not a confused person who was doing th business just for the heck of it is not easy..
U need to be clear in ur thought about how u r going to explain it..
And in the long run if u think about joining the family business back then in my opinion u definitely need to have a solid understanding about your own family business and how u r going to squeeze the best out of the MBA degree u will get..
In my opinion join the business.. Understand it.. Study for CAT.. Give it a shot.. And hope for the best..
