Mdi pgpim 2009 -
09-01-2009, 03:53 PM
Welcome all ...
As the CAT results are out, it's time to take the next step forward towards admissions, also with number of courses on offer it's a critical time to weigh options. This thread is dedicated to MDI - PGPIM (post graduate programme in international management) for the 2009 batch.
Some general info about the course are provided in the next post.
And I would try to answer some basic queries beforehand.
Feel free to shoot queries and as the thread gets fatter just follow the basic posting etiquttes. Try not to repeat questions and go through the thread once before posting, which will keep things simple for everyone.
Hoping to create an effective plateform for some interchange of information.
Best of luck to all aspirants and welcome again on a great journey...

Hey Ashwini,
Thank you for starting this post. I have applied for the PGPIM course at MDI. My CAT scores are -
QA - 72.3 percentile
DI - 96.5 percentile
VA - 99.4 percentile
OA - 98.8 percentile
I also have a 18 months work ex in family business(hope that counts) and my acads and ECs are average.
Do I stand a chance to get a call from MDI? I am extremely disheartened with my quant score. I hope this does not become a reason for my not getting a call.
Thanks for your help.

MDI PGPIM or Post Graduate Programme in International Management is a dual degree course (PGPIM and MEB) presently in its third batch. The course is an outcome of a need which is to create global managers with an International perspective of thinking. Managers who can adapt to changing context and can deliver consistently irrespective of geographies and cultures. It sounds good but how do we get such managers?? And what does the course have to offer which gives this distinction to its undertakers??
Well that’s what we would like to throw some light on with this and many consequent posts. To start with some basics, the course has 6 terms, of which 1st four (semester 1) is delivered in India at MDI, Gurgaon while the last two terms (semester 2) is delivered in Europe at one of ESCP-EAP campuses.
The term in India lasts till about February since course inception (mid June) and March onwards the course continues in European campuses. The European term is held at ESCP-EAP which boasts of being the oldest business school in the world and according to this year’s FT rankings the second best European Business School. The Institute has 5 campuses across Europe, the oldest and primary campus is Paris while London, Berlin, Madrid and Torino (Italy) campuses have been established to further increase the European exposure.
The course we undergo in European campuses is called MEB (Masters in European Business) and is a insightful two term course in European business environment and management course. The two semesters are so meshed up and designed to complement each other that they provide a complete learning experience which especially emphasizes on multinational exposure, and understanding.
One important thing to note is, the course doesn’t in the traditional sense provide a specialization. So, one does not for example specialize in marketing or finance etc. It’s a general management course in the barest terms. Also to note is the fact that the course isn’t on International Trade. It’s a general management course with special emphasis on providing candidates with International perspective and globally suitable aptitude.
Now this might sound as a deficit but there is another perspective to this situation. The course has as its mandatory part an internship in Europe. Which has traditionally lasted for 3,6 and in some cases even 9 months for our seniors in some of the best multinationals one can think of. Now this internship, with a profile that one chose in whichever field one thought as prospective, gives you that leverage and essential knowledge of the domain that one gets through classroom lectures in normal specialization courses. Of course the two things are not identical; learning through actually working in a real company, as I surmise is a pretty subtle yet effective way nonetheless.
After the internship, the students are encouraged to find International placements, and depending on their wish they are free to appear for the normal MDI placements, as well.
Another thing I missed to mention is the class comprises of about 60 students (semester 1), around 35 of whom are chosen from CAT (Indian students) while about 25 guys join the batch from various ESCP-EAP campuses. So the class by itself is quite multi-cultural literally (we have representation from 7 countries in the present batch).
I have tried to provide some basic info about the course above, yet there are many more subtleties obviously, which I will keep posting as I remember or they come up in the forum.
Cheers...

Re: Mdi pgpim 2009 -

Well about last cut offs etc, the percentile for calls has been on steady rise over the 3 batches. Present batch got GD-PI calls till about 96 percentile and final conversions were made till percentile 97.5 (lowest sectional in one section which got a call and converted that I know is around 72) or more. So that should present a fair picture, last year the percentiles for calls were around 92 and higher. So the growth is sufficient, and since number of seats is limited, the course is kind of a niche and figures can go higher this time. Nontheless one section percentile minimum around 75 and overall percentile more then 97 should almost ensure a call, please respectively check your percentiles with this rough reference.
Another query of comparison with PGPM keeps arising and is vastly debated. But, the bottom line is both courses are different and can’t really be compared, both have there pros and cons. But, definitely PGIM is a new course while PGPM has established itself over the years. And PGIM offers the kind of Global exposure which is unparalleled by perhaps any other course in the country, if I may say so. So there will be many more factors but these are the basic ones. We will see other subtleties later.
About the expenses, the fees is around 13 as far I know for coming batch (exact figures can be checked from websites and might change) besides that one has to bear the expenses of lodging, food and travelling during the entire stay in Europe which can last up to 10 months or even more. However, one starts with an intern at the end of 4 month studies (semester 2) and from past batches I can safely say become financially not just independent but can even save for some euro trips or gifts or just plain savings. So it’s fine to believe you need to arrange extra funds (besides the fees) for 4 months which are around 700-800 Euros or Pounds per month depending on weather you are in Paris or London respectively. Similar are the expenses for Turin.

It really would have been great to have to here as we always seem to keep fighting with European languages out here...
I think you know the answer the only criterion for a call is CAT percentile only, I am sure no institute can develop a program to read and understand so many CVs so all they are able to do is judge you on basis of CAT as well as other academics which they get from the forms you fill, unfortunately that doesn't take into account just anything else about your profile... I always have believed the system is flawed but, looks like it's not going to change pretty soon, till a way to measure other attributes is discovered...
as for other cut offs related queries I hope my last post will give a general idea towards last year's trends and possible criterion for this year...
Cheers...
