hey dOOd...

u got to make a decision n stick to it man....no point in getting opinion frm others...
coz basically i can scare u sayin that I know hell lot of ppl. who hav got IIM calls n havn't got any the nxt time they appeared for CAT....or may b give u the most optimistic scenario sayin that since u hav got it thru L this time u can certainly crack the Big 3 nxt time irrespective of working conditions n stuff..there r ppl who hav done that before n no reason why u can't do it...n so on...actually depends what ur priorities r n what u exactly want...obviously 1 yr of wrk ex. is goin to make a diff.( not too much)but then do u want an MBA frm IIML or an MBA frm A/B/C???and how confident ur abt cracking CAT n gettin thru GD/PI nxt yr....just make a decision n never regret taking the decision...

cheers,
peebs

Hi,

I would suggest that you join IIML all because that:
1. Companies do NOt consider of 1 year as any experience.
2. You need to crack CAT again.
3. The level of placements only differs only for the top 10-15 ppal across IIM ABC and L.

Regards.
SJ.

Re: Risky Decision !!!....Any Comments - 16-05-2004, 04:11 PM

a lotta angles to view ur problem hav been brought up in the posts above but in the end it all boils down to ur own assesment of urself,if u hav the perseverance ,the drive ,the tolerance to go thru the pressure again, the ability to withstand insecurities n obviusly the luck to perform to ur potential the next time.instead of asking others, ask urself.

as for my view,i was gettin arnd 63 in the cancelled cat,was LUCKY that it was cancelled, got arnd 66 in the next un ,got into iim calcutta now n a lot of guys in my coll who were getting a more marks than me in the cancelled test got no call this time.so i feel that one needs dollops of luck even after working his/her's ass off.

n maybe if u take up iim lucknow, after 10 yrs u wont think"what if i had tried fr iim a/b/c" but if u let it go tis time n (god forbid)if ur unable to make it to iims eventually, ull think all ur life-"what if i had taken up iim lucknow"
its ur call,ur life.
all the best.

dear Bandhu,

u r a courageous man, i mean very few will think abt chucking cat once they get through it, though the decision is entirely yours, but me being a CA and presently working aspiring to be ur junior in IIM -a,b,c or l can say that once u r through , give ur heart to it and don't think abt chucking it. reasons:
reason 1:- u getting in a job right now, won't be doing any superior stuff, all routine stuff, if u r an engg and get through may be infy or something like that u will be one of masses, bcoz every tom,**** and harry out there is engg and that too frm iit to boot. it will be routine stuff all the way.
reason 2:- once u get in a job, it won't be rosy 10 to 6 job, they will haul ur ass for everything, by the time u reach home sleep willl be priority no. 1 and office will become biwi no.1 fr u.
reason3:- cat is not only abt hard work, yeah i understand that it is hard work but u need that huge 2% of luck, which just mite not be there maybe next time, maybe the interviewer next time won't like the shade of color of ur shirt, it can be anything silly.
reason4:- last but not the least, u cracked it boss, don't crib now, there are many who have wrk ex and many who don't have wrk ex but are brilliant like u , studied and put in labor like u but didn't make it through, so go on............... destiny only knocks on ur door once, so may be this is urs...... II of M

I think it's an excellent decision. Of course, I have reason to think that way - I had a final call from XLRI (BM) this year and gave it up so that I could take a shot again at the Big 3 next year. It's all about what you believe - if you think you can make it next year, go for it. Don't listen to what others say because almost 99% of them would tell you not to leave IIML. A year of workex certainly gives you a much better perspective of why you want to do an MBA. Go for it next year - thats what i'm gonna do !!

well, the entire thing should be thought from ur point of view, buddy...
first of all, u shud answer the question: how important is an MBA to u?
...and secondly, what u expect to gain from the MBA?

if u just wanna go to the top three coz. they get the best students and u'll have them as ur batchmates, then i m sorry to say that ur decision isnt the best one, coz. a lot of brilliant students miss the A,B,C bus due to one bad day at CAT or the GD/PI and enter L or K or I and a lot of average/above average ones make it to A,B,C.
in short there's not a lot of difference in the batch profile across the IIMs.

..and if ur criteria is is the higher average salaries at the Big 3, then again u havent thought deeply coz. if the Big 3 have average salary as 7.00 lac, then the Smaller 3 have it pegged at 6.0-6.5 lac, again not a real big difference, atleast not worth wasting an year for that! ...and neway, whether u land up at the upper half or lower half of ur batch, it totally depends on UR performace and not on the institute. i guess u understand what i m talking bout.

..and if its the huge sports facilities u r talking bout, believe me they r not going to make much impact on ur future as a manager. all other facilities r equally available at L,I,K

...and if u r conscious about the rankings, then IIML has always been at no. 4, which is not at all bad.

...and if u just want to be gutsy, then i would say its better to be sensible than gutsy...wasting a WHOLE year of your life for a gain which may or may not come and even if it comes, it may or it may not be a gain at all!

so think sensible and act. the brave act isnt always the best act.
its like u want to save a person from drowning in the river and u have two options:
first: u urself dive into the river knowing that u know swimming, but believe me life saving is a different game altogether.
second: the person standing next to u is a professional live saver.

i think u would be rational enough to inform the live saver bout the drowning man!
if u would have thought otherwise, then i think u should forget IIML and prepare for CAT again.

gud luck to u.

bow.

Dude
I admire ur guts if u indeed opt out of IIML.

Certainly wud make a good case-in-point when u appear for your next CAT and the GD/PI b'coz u cud convince dem that you would settle for nothing but the best (a quality/trait of a sucessful manager).

But then, let's consider a hypothetical case :
NXT yr, u get a single IIM call from Lucknow ?
What wud u do then?

Anyway, in the words of Morpheus to Neo in MATRIX-I "I can only show you the door; you will have to walk thru it. "

Hmm

Very gutsy. I'd say go ahead - that much more chance for me

I'm in such a different situation here - got calls from BCLIK - converted only I - going through with I's processes. It's an IIM after all. Only big disadvantage that I has compared to ABC(L) is that it doesn't have a long list of illustrious alumni which'd help the batches get placed. But then that's probably only me - been working in family business for 4 years+ (though didn't have a single year to put on my forms - no fulltime paid job post-graduation) - so 1 more year of working there would probably not be much helpful. Besides it'd be tough trying to explain the panel next year why I left this offer AFTER converting it.

And boss, you've got L!!! It's in the top there with ABC. So (considering the worst case scenario - actually most people would wonder about it being worst-case) suppose you get I & K calls only next year, and you want to finally join an MBA course after having worked a year, and you're asked by the panel of I & K why you left a chance to join L last year... what'd you say? Now, in best case scenario - you get all 6 calls - almost all panels would ask why you didn't join L last year - L panel would not be very kind - and ABC panels might be pleased a bit that you prefer them over L, but still the impression isn't very pleasant. Ofcourse if you plan to invent some genuine sounding reason then good luck

Well, finally it's your decision, so best of luck with whatever you do. Oh, and don't forget that if you go ahead with your gutsy decision I'll be a bit glad (as my chances increase by that much)

Amit
