IIM interview experiences (for work-ex >5 yrs)

Guys,

I am posting some interview questions which were posed to me in IIM ABCL interviews. Due to lack of time , I will just post the Q's and leave my actual experiences for next week. Hope junta will pardon me for that

Background :-
B.E (Mech) BIT Mesra
TCS - 5.5 yrs (3 yrs onsite)
CAT : 99.58
Calls : All six (didn't give K,I), Final call from SPJ

1. How many times did you attempt CAT
2. Why so late in considering MBA as a career option
3. Adjusting with the batch of avg age 22 yrs (I am 28!!)
4. What companies/job profile are you looking at in placements
5. As IBM country head , how would you compete with the TCS's and Infy's of India
6. Will you have probs with academics, being out of touch for so many years
7. Will you take up classes for first yr guys (when you are in 2nd yr) -how'll you approach it ?
8. Tata Business Excellence model/CMM/6 Sigma/BPO/ Business development
9. Business Plan for a startup
10. My US/Europe experiences & learnings (they went into details of where I stayed etc..just to check if I wasn't bluffing )
11. Ethics/Corporate governance
12. Map you career to a batsman coming at 85/1 (7 overs) in a 50 over match.
13. What consultancy can you provide us to improve the branding of our institute (IIMA prof asked me this )
14. Contingency plans ..in case no calls from IIM's
15. Q's on your domain knowledge
16. Why not ISB/US b schools (I had 740 in GMAT)
17. NO Q's ON ACADS in any IIM intvs

This what I can recall right now ..will add if I can remember some more.

Gut feeling : You need to sell yourself a bit harder than others, as 5+ yrs wrk ex is an exception rather than norm and IIM's need to be doubly sure whether they should take you or not.

My IIMA … interview on 16th april went like this

Background: -

Mechanical Engineer, DCE
IT Industry: - 4 + years (Bombay/Delhi/London)

P1 starts the interview

1. How you think the Case study went.
2. Do you think that it was a comprehensive one?
3. What other aspect could have been added in the Case study?
4. Are you familiar with Prabhakarn (LTTE).
5. What is he doing these days/where he is these days ;(
6. What is LTTE, tell us full form and what are they trying to achieve?
7. What is the Problem in Sri lanka, who are the parties involved, why did it started?
8. What is the religion of tamlians and sinhalis
9. Where is the Jafna, is there still Srilankan Govt hold?
10. Show us the location of Jafna in the Map

(asks P2…..to carry on )

1. Why MBA at this junction
2. Do u plan to take study leave
3. Tell us about the IIM alumni working at your org?
4. What are you working upon, your role?
5. What do you think are the emerging opportunities for Indian IT Companies?
6. What do you think about the areas of opportunities for IT companies in India.
7. Give to examples where you think IT can turn around the business
8. What is the application area of IT in a Manufacturing sector?

Nods to P3.. To carry on)
(This guy started on a tough note…. as wanted me every question to the point , no here there which may be I was doing …. )

1. What is your project about?
2. What does it do and which industry it caters to. How it helps them to grow.
3. How long you have being working on this project, what others project you have done.
4. What’s your role, in term of responsibilities, list them?
5. Tell us about the phases of SDLC, how is it different for a project/product development
6. Have do ever being involved in business requirements understanding.
7. What Phase in between the Requirement and the high level design (He makes a face at me)
8. You didn’t answer my question. (I said that there is no phase in between rather so many out comes, which acts as input to next phase)
9. Why didn’t you tell this before? (I smiled)?
He too smiles … to my relief and says …… thanks please take all your certificates)

work exp-6yr (2.5 yr onsite).

The questions you mentioned will definitely help me in being well prepared.
Any more pointers are highly appreciated.

this is the gr8ness of this forum, I bet u can not get these feedback anywhere in the world, Because people having so much of work ex are very rare and getting calls also.

hey guys with 4+ years work ex... donno get disheartened.. I had 4 yrs work ex but still cracked the plum --IIMA

Me almost 4.99 yrs in IT.

Calls from BLK. BL rejected. Got K

GD/PI for B was v good. All questions pertaining to M&A.
Okay for L. and was worse for K.





but then .. its okay ...

regarding work ex:
1. does workex in an automobile company(Maruti, in which i have to join soon) as a GET(Graduate Engineer Trainee) counts in PI?

2.almost everyone i have read in this forum is from IT sector..so is there nybdy who cracked CAT after working in a manufacturing company?

3. do u really get time for preps. after spending 8-9 hrs on shopfloor...huh?
