Hi Ramanujan... i understand ur anxiety but i urge u not to lose ur rationality in d process...
brother y dont u go thru my last post... (d big one) ..

i see tht u av lots of info but i m not too sure how u r analyzing it.. u r trying too hard to predict d future based on a single observation... i wud ask u if it is advisable at any juncture in any form of forecasting... to predict on d basis of jus 1 observation? & i.e (in this case) d 1st batch...
i understand tht u av jus 1 observation after all n ur analyzing mind must b getting restless to deduce something out of it... but thts d trap whr even most managers also faulter...
buddy as i av told u.. tht was d 1st batch they had nobdy to guide them.. u cant even imagine wot was it like for thm whn they had no idea abt how they will get an internship n how to apply for it in europe.. it sounds easy cos u r in india.. but if u know nothing abt it n u r at a new place whr companies dont come for campus placement... hmm.. its tough out here... but now we had d info n d help from our seniors.. cos of which we applied effectively n in time. thts y evrybdy is already in d process of getting an internship...
talking abt job... i told u MDI didnt do d wisest of things by keeping a differntial in d placement process.. but things r easing out.. its not gonna remain d same.. but i think u still av some +ve take aways.. in all d companies whr IM was allowed to sit.. they proved quite impressive.. jus chk out how many consulting firms come to MDI.. Avlon consulting is 1 major recruiter... u can understand how many students wud av been waiting for this company... n who took it in d end?? IM student... thr were clean sweeps in many companies' placement process... so buddy dont really think tht d picture is too gloomy .. n things r going to b tough cos it was tough for d 1st batch... hmm... u wont do much good for urself tht ways...
lemme tell u 1 more thing.. GS came for lateral placement offering a very high salary ... u know.. not even a single person joined... cos of d profile being offered... well thts another reason y i wud ask u to read my lonnnnggg post 1ce again.. whr i mentioned something abt d IB n consulting industries..
lemme tell u something more... this is for evry person who wants to go into finance...
today majority of d big I-Banks & Pvt. Equity players manage their india focussed funds from middle east and S.E Asian countries like Singapore... dont limit urself to wot u get in india.. n also try to break d concept tht MBA is booming in india n they get good salary + good name so they must b getting d best work in d industry...
god its too complex with lots n lots of things tht i can tell u... but in d nut shell...
dont base all ur analysis on a single observation... n even if u do.. thn do it like a manager who understands d reliability of sheer statistics and knows when to use his judgement.

well more after xam... i av again fallen into d trap of clearing these confusions... but more after a while.. got to tell u a lot...
n frns i will also tell u wot i personally dint like in PGPIM n wot r d real challenges which probably u av not even touched...

hey folks.. just wanted to tell u something.. which even v didnt try but it can prove to be d X-Factor for this course... thing is simple.. u only av to study for 1 yr in IM... June to June... (u will do it from June 2008 to June 2009) n after tht u can do even permanent job rather than internship... but u need to plan.. most important thing is networking... i will tell u d details ltr.. i mean how can u create opportunities in India whr campus placement is common... n if u want to get a job here, in UK... i think its very much possible.. right from july 09... however i think only ppl with work-ex can avail this opportunity.. so if u av work -ex n a decent salary.. this is d right time to enquire a bit abt HSMP/Tier 1 visa (for london).. this will b anyways required whn u finally try to get a job in uk (may b after ur internship) it also is pretty beneficial cos its always good to mention tht u av work visa even whn u apply for internships ( though u can do ur internship with student visa) this is bcos as i av already told u, campus placement doesnt work in EU/US market... here companies use rigourous processes to take interns n thn they hire them whn they pass out.. so they want candidates who can further work for them after d completion of internships...
this is jus an idea.. n i think it can work... lets c which IM batch becomes d 1st one to actually implement this idea n start working jus after 1 yr of studies.. thus making it a 1 yr dual degree course !!! cos i m sure thr wud b few for whom MBA was never a goal but jus a means n they will try to take d shortest path to whr they want to reach!!
thr r plethora of opportunities... u jus need to find thm out... n probably PGPIM will drive u out of ur comfort zone and urge u to think... cos in indian b-schools u will never realize the importance of networking.. cos u will never need it... u will never think abt d IB & consulting industries in india cos ur benchmarking will remain too low.. chk out wots happening abroad... its this comfort zone which will never urge u to see y most of d Pvt Equity funds, Hedge funds and FII work on indian markets from outside India...
Guys raise ur benchmark... wake up to IM... this is d future...


PS: as i see a lot of apprehension abt placement process in europe n IM in general.. i wud request u guys to do some research on how students from top B-Schools in US/EU get jobs.. wots d procedure they follow?? is it as easy as it is in india?? do companies come for campus placement in Stanford/Harward?? is it really too different from IM?
I wudnt b surprised if somebdy says "Wot d hell?? sinister cancer is happy cos in paris ppl av got 3 internships in 3 days!!! v get d entire batch placed in 2 days flat!! " but frn this doesnt happen here... n its for d good of d students tht it doesnt happen like tht...

I also want to categorically say tht its no longer true tht MDI still doesnt av a placement process for us...

3. Other thing is internship picture is not so rosy in London/Paris this year. People there are struggling to get intern due to global economic issues. In that case your expenses remain 12-14L. In case we dont get Internship there then internship is India will be organised by MDI or the students has to find themselves.

Well its true tht d global financial meltdown is showing its effects on d internship scenario but honestly till now things r going smooth.. but yes if u wanna ask for a contingency plan... hmm... i m not too sure how it works with ppl going back to MDI for internhips... actually we av not thought of any such thing yet... n i hope tht if d internship calls/interviews keep happening with d same pace as it is happening right now.. thn hopefully nobdy frm our batch wud av to go back to india...
One extremely imp thing.. pls prepare ur french well.. it will b taught at MDI... if u get ur french right.. u will drastically improve ur position....

1) You mentioned that joining PGPIM would be a slight risk, so my question is that should someone like me ,who does not have a sound financial background, go ahead and take the chance?
2) How much opportunities are their for a fresher like me in europe (coz i guess majority ,if not all, of our classmates are gonna b work ex people????
3) Which campus would be better - Paris or London????

Ah the risk i m talking abt is not related to ur background and profile... cos if u dont av fin backgrnd thn its as big a disadvantage in PGPIM as it is in any other course.. though i wud not worry abt this aspect.. most of d students in our batch av got intern in fin here in europe... i think only 1 of them had a fin backgrnd.. so dont worry abt tht.. n yes if u r concerned abt specialization... honestly, i really dont see a reason y u will b ranked less than a person who had couple more subjects on fin.. companies r picking up managers... if they had to pick up such core fin guys thn they wud go to DU for Bachelor and masters students of Commerce n Finance... though i m not a fin guy but i m sure that none of my bathcmates interested in fin was asked any question in interviews which was beyond d scope of wot we av been taught...

for freshers.. opportunities r plenty... internship will not be an issue at all.. u might av to think abt final job placement as u r a fresher so u cant get an HSMP/Tier1 visa.. so u will av to depend on d company to get u a work permit... it is also a possibility tht after d course u work in india for approx an yr... get ur HSMP visa done n thn come back to UK for job... This happens in case u dont get work permit n u still want to work in UK....

3) Which campus would be better - Paris or London????

both campus offer different opprtunities... it can b discussed individually for each PGPIM student but not right now.. u can leave this for a while..
