24-10-2005, 09:27 PM
Ahoy junta!
This thread is another PG CAV special only for the CAT junta who consider the forums their second [first(?)] home . CAT is just 4 weeks away and you need every piece of analysis and data that will enable you to crack the CAT and stride your way to the home stretch!
This thread will be handled and updated by Amit @ Career Avenues who will be uploading extremely high quality CAT specific inputs, questions and exclusive content that will help you get a better hold over your CAT preparations and prepare you for the exam you have been preparing so hard for!
I would suggest subscribing to this thread and bookmarking it rightaway because it will be a one stop thread for exclusive CAT content.
One note though - This thread is NOT for asking CAT prep related queries. Those type of queries can be posted in the other threads on in the Ask CAV thread.
Wishing you all the best folks! Make the best of this unique alliance and post your feedback and ofcourse, tell the world

Its very easy to see the shortcomings in your prep. First you need to learn to read entire paragraphs and understand what is asked of you what is not. I had clearly stated that you shouldn't be posting CAT related preparations in this thread, but you still go ahead and do it.
Why will anyone take you seriously if you dont have the ability to read, assimilate and understand a few lines ?

Hi PGites,
With less then a month to go for CAT, it is the perfect time to raise the tempo a little bit, and make sure that we leave no stone unturned to smash CAT. So on this thread I propose to throw a few quant questions, or upload some some stuff on CAT related topics.
So let me begin by posting three questions from the CAV classic quant workshop, which have been a hit with all the students. These are not difficult and have fairly elegant solutions. All are standard questions, and you should be able to get these with a little bit of thinking.
So here we go.
Shoot your answers and methods only if you have all three answers.
Q1. A police motorcyclist is escorting a 20 mile line of VIP vehicles. He drives at constant speed from his starting place at the back to the front of the line, and immediately returns with the same speed to the back of the line. He arrives at the back just as the line has moved 20 miles. How many miles did the policeman travel?
Q2. One morning it starts to snow at a constant rate. Later, at 6:00am, a snow plow sets out to clear a straight street. The plow can remove a fixed volume of snow per unit time, in other words its speed it inversely proportional to the depth of the snow. If the plow covered twice as much distance in the first hour as the second hour, what time did it start snowing?
Q3. Two squares of sides 2 cm and 14 cm are drawn on a line of 16 cm, with one of their sides touching. Two circles are then drawn inside the two squares, one in each. If the circles are the largest possible circles that can fit into the squares, then what is the distance between the centers of the two circles ?

The basics of Time Management -
24-10-2005, 10:43 PM
There is one question that confounds all CAT aspirants and in my experience with thousands of students, almost each and everyone has asked this question, "How do I divide the time between the sections ?"
The answer to this question is not simple, and it would depend from person to person. It has to take into account scores in mock cats, strengths and weaknesses, aspirations, etc.
Here I present a simple guideline to plan your two hours better. All these strategies are based on the assumption of 3 section tests. Please note that if everything is working fine in your CAT prep, then do not change a well-oiled strategy. However, you could experiment with some of the suggestions that I present here.
FACT :- For a three section test, whatever said and done, almost everyone would require atleast a minimum of 30 minutes to reach the sectional cut-off, whatever be the strength and nature of the test/section.
The 30-30-30 minute strategy : This is a strategy for someone whose fundaas are good in all areas, and has been performing consistently across the three sections in mock CATs. In this strategy, you spend exactly 30 minutes on each section, and then based on how your test has gone, you may divide the balance time as 10-10-10 or 20-10 or 15-15 etc. The advantage of this strategy is that all sections automatically get atleast a minimum amount of time, and the decision on how you spend your last 30 minutes is based upon more than a good understanding of the relative difficulty levels of each section. Also if some section/s does not go well, you have time to recover.
The 20-20-20 minute strategy : In this strategy, you spend only 20 minutes per section. This is ideal for students who have one very strond section. For eg. I would normally score 20 + in DI in 20 minutes. After 1 hour, the test taker would have had a decent look at the paper, and if he feels that he has cleared the cut-off in the section of his strength, then he can go for 30-30 or 40-20 in the remaining sections. However, if the strength section has not gone well, then you can spend another 5-10 minutes to put it back on track, and accordingly divide the balance time. This strategy is recommended for those who are comfortable with jumping between sections at anytime during the test.
The 50-40-30 minute strategy : Obviously for those who have a strength, a weakness and an OK section. Atleast it does not require jumping between sections. Also this strategy, or the next strategy can be used for "maximisation of net score" strategy.
Maximisation of net score : There are some who feel that 98 + percentile is beyond them, and yet keep on trying to balance the scores. Although I personally feel that nothing is over till the D-day, and know many who score sub 90 in mock CATs but end up with 96 + percentile in CAT, not every student sees it my way. CAT is not a test of the IIMs alone and there are many colleges that accept CAT scores are not as stringent about sectional cut-offs as the IIMs. So if you aim to target such colleges, then modify your strategy to ensure that your overall net score is high, with each section contributing a decent enough minimum.
The 60-30-30 strategy : The all-or-nothing strategy where you spend maximum time on the area of your strength. For eg. one may attempt all 50 questions IN VA RC in 60 minutes and get 35+, and then get 7-10 in DI and quant, therefore ending up with a score of close to 50. This would be overall equivalent of 95 + percentile. Here you can definitely say bye-bye to IIM calls, but may still get some calls from lesser rung colleges. A risky strategy, but can work if you do well in the 30 minutes that you devote to the other sections.
My favourite strategy
35-35-35 : I work on the premise that the CAT is not for 2 hours and hence aim at clearing all cut-offs in less than 30 minutes. I succeed in doing that in atleast 2 of them. So I adopt the less-than-2-hours-for-CAT strategy and seriously finish the paper in 105 minutes. This is something that you need to try during home tests and mocks, and is a very aggressive strategy. In the real CAT, the remaining 15 minutes are bonus.
Please note that the above time are indicators and need to be modified smartly to suit your need. But some thought on this would help you have a more clear perspective of the 2 hours.
Cheers
Amit
