Mba =wk ex? - 13-06-2005, 11:13 AM

hi all,
i c many facing this dilemmma work exp. of two/three years also leads u to the same position which an Mba acquires after two years of studies and infact the work exp gives the 'real' exposure while Mba lessons even from gud institutes are mostly not as applicable as a real life exp u might gather in two years, then y shud one spend two whole years doing an mba n not work in his relevant field n know the nitty-gritty earlier by 2 years?

Looking forward to some gud suggestions/feedbacks.

thanx in advance,

Cattiee.

MBA after Work-ex!!! - 13-06-2005, 11:28 AM

Hi Cattie!!!

Your observation is very true!!! After having more than 5 yrs of Work-ex in top MNCs, I guess. I can teach a lesson or two to a newbie MBA in Sales management.

But also the fact is that, you should do your MBA after having a good relevant work-ex,

1.) It ensures that you can always relate to what you are taught, to what you have already experienced in your job.

2.) this leads to quicker and better absorption of all the theories that you are getting taught.

3.) You are better equipped to start hitting from day 1 in your new job(Post MBA), compared to others without having the work-ex( and ofcourse, recruiters value that like anything).

4.) Lastly, you will return home with a few bucks extra compared to your some batchmates!!!!

MBA definitely helps, as there are many things, which you see in your daily job(relevant, if it is) but, if you learn the same thing in the classroom, it gives you a tottaly different perspective.

So, in my opinion, it is better to have good relevant work-ex and then go for MBA.

am preparing for CAT 05 and I hope, shld get through.

Rgds

Hi Cattie,

Your point is valid for a period of say, 5 years. After your MBA and after 2 years of work-ex in a good MNC is almost equivalent, in terms of money. In terms of experience, you might not understand stuff out of your domain. So, if you have experience in sales, you might not know marketing or finance.
While it is true that a number of business leaders were not MBA's, it is also true that a lot more of them ARE MBA's in current scenario. Well, an MBA makes you a generalist, to my opinion as contrast to a specialist in a specific job.

So, for this fact, your movement across and along the ladder in corporate world is easier if you have a formal education of the domain.

Other than that, my personal thought is that, one doesn't get recruited at the same position as a fresher MBA, at least in IT service industry. One of my friends who left infosys for IIM-K, is going to get recruited at least at a consultant position. In contrast, I will, at most, be a programmer analyst in the same time. You could extrapolate the future trajectory of the two and you will notice the difference.

hi cattie!

out of the 2 options
1) fresher+ MBA.
2) W Ex + MBA.

chose with deligence.

w ex + Mba seems bright but remember, u got to have the right kind of job,
where u could spare time for MBA entrance prep.
in case u get into Marketing & sales, or any time intensive profile. u will strugle to follow ur study routine.and that .....is v frustrating . + it aint that easy to chuck your job and start preparing for a mba entrance, it does reflect on your career graph.

Freshers may generally understand busines related subjects as another extension of acads, but with exp u think practically in these fields. Example.....i am engineer..
i wish i could learn accounts...but morever..when u join ur first job u r better prepared( & paid) as an MBA.

More Later.......

Perspective - 17-06-2005, 12:37 PM

I feel that it is the 'opportunity cost' you need to analyse. Also an MBA opens new avenues for you which may otherwise be hijacked by the 'newbie' from a top institute with an MBA.
but as already been said, the job must be such that you should find time to study. I work in a research and finance Co. in Mumbai in the financial research division.I have a five day week and timings 10- 7 . So i am finding time to prep for CAT-05. Also, we need to put into perspective, how best we are able to manage our schedules and how relevant our present job is to our chosen field of MBA...

CFA would be a good option
u could do it from places like icfai or http://www.cfainstitute.org/
but i guess the differnc is anyone can do/apply for the course whereas a good mba entails serious comtp right at the entrance level which is what i think is taken keenly
and even when it comes to the scope of responsibilties or cross functional movememnt within the finanacial sector n mba enables movement as compared to cfa which would in some sense restricts one within the domain
I think it is well said by ankur about the acceptance of mba across fields
regards,
vineet
