Currently Not working.. Planning for MBA - 19-10-2009, 09:33 PM

Hello pagal friends,

I am currently working in a firm in US in the IT field. Due to change in my visa status, i would not be able to work here . I have 5 years of experience. I have been longing to do my MBA since the time of my engineering.. may be its time now..
I am planning to go back to Bangalore and prepare ardently for GMAT for 4 months sitting at home and give it a best shot
  1. Is it a good choice to plan my MBA at this point?
  2. After i give my GMAT.. i would still NOT be working. Is that a negative point when i am applying for different universities..?
  3. Is it common to take a break and sit at home to prepare for GMAT?
  4. Should i look for a job in Bangalore after my GMAT to boost my profile?
  5. Also i have been in the software side for the past 5 years and want to move to Marketing side for my MBA. Any tips as to how this shift should be made?
Here's my profile details:
Education :
10th aggregate: 92%
12th aggrefate: 78%
Bachelors in Engineering (E&C) : 77%
Work Experience: 5 years as programmer/analyst with 2 years in US.

Extra curricular activities: Not much at all.

Please advice.. I am in a very confused state right now.. My worry is that i would not be able to work in US in couple of months.
This is my first post in this forum.. Hoping to get some practicle advice..

Thanks,
Suchi

Hi Suchi,

I have kind of similar background. Work Ex of 4 years in IT. 1 year of it in US. Currently, I am doing MBA in India. If you are interested in MBA in US just go for it.
1. 5 years is perfect work ex for US universities. The recession too would have beaten back after 2 years even in US. So you would have great opportunities when you pass out.
2. If you can manage work along with preparing for GMAT, nothing like it. If you would like to take a break and fully concentrate on GMAT, then you would need to justify your break convincingly in your SOP and interviews. You can always find ways to turn negative points to positives
3. Many ppl take a break to prepare. Some succeed due to it while others don't. My friend is trying for 2 years but is not able to get thru. So it depends on your capability and ability to take a failure and move on.
4. Moving from IT to marketing, you would again need to justify why in your SOP and interview. If you have worked in IT for a client in marketing domain. you can always leverage this and explain how you got interested seeing the marketing work of your clients, blah blah.

Getting admitted needs good scores and a lot of talent at bluffing the remaining way thru. I had lot of doubts before starting my MBA too but now i am very happy i did
