Should I quit to prepare for CAT?? - 07-05-2009, 03:45 PM

Hi,

I have a 3.5 yrs of IT experience - grew from Software developer to Team Lead. Now I want to take up managerial tasks. I don't see this happening in the near future in my current job, which pays me fairly well but I would like to make more money after my MBA.

Mine is a demanding job, and I am also married- left with only a little time to study everyday.

I want to give my best shot at CAT 2009. Should I quit my job and take up full time preparation?

What do you suggest?

Thanks

Hi newbie
You can always quit and prepare, but imagine a scenario where profs have to choose between you and someone who scored the same percentile as you, while working at the same time, whom would they rather choose!
Hence, unless you are sure that there are ways in which you could keep yourself gainfully occupied(certifications/ngo work/entrepreneurship/freelance jobs) while preparing after quitting your job, then you should quit, else no.
Also,if you choose to continue working and prepare for mba like the rest of IIM(Indian IT Male),you have to find innovative ways to squeeze out time.

Thanks a lot for the advice.

I am a married woman. Besides work I have to take care of my house- cook and clean.

I think very few IIMs (Indian IT Males) will find time to study/prepare if they have to do the above.

Will the professors be sensitive enough to understand this as my reason for quitting?

The title of this thread "Should I quit to prepare for CAT??" is too broad... ain't it???

Ummm..that is indeed a tough one,but somehow with that argument you will have a tough time convincing profs.I would still say try squeezing out some time from your schedule(I am not saying its easy) and try studying, even if its just an hour/day and see how it goes for a month or so.Then, take a call from there.

Well, I understand your situation, but I wont suggest quitting a well-secure, well-paid job to prepare for CAT. Simply because, CAT is very unpredictable, it all depends on the day, even a student with 99s in all mock CATs can struggle (and vice-versa), and I've seen many such cases.

I am not discouraging you or anything, but just keeping a practical approach. I sincerely wish you score very well and get your desired college. But in the worst case scenario (god-forbid), you will be left with no other option-no job, no CAT and finding a new job can be difficult.

At the end of the day, the decision is all yours. After all, you are a better judge of your abilities and situations that you got to handle. All the best!

Don't think of quitting at all.....coz you are already married and taking such risk can be very risky(looking at the current economic depression).......i can share a example of my friend who has just completed PGDBM from IIM-C, he was also working in a top firm in Bangalore(his work-ex was 2 years)....what he did was......he used to spend daily 2 hours(regularly) for CAT prep....and for last 1.5 months before CAT he took leave from the company(example: your not well or fractured your leg...can be the reasons for the leave).....and during this time period he used to spend 8-12 hours for prep......and finally he is through........Last but not the least....He had started his prep just 5 months before CAT and he was a decent(not genius) student during his entire life span.....
Now you can decide....."Where there is a will, there is a way"
Cheers and all the best for your future ahead.....
