changing streams after a regular BBA - 07-11-2008, 11:39 PM

I am a BBS student in the final year. I am looking for further avenues of stduying apart from pursuing an MBA. Given the general nature of the course Iam unable to pursue a masters in any course iam interested in like economics and finance as these courses look for strong mathematical undergrad degrees.
suggestions anyone?

Hi There !!

I know it's a tad difficult to change your streams after graduation. If you are specifically interested in Economics then most of the good institutes like IGIDR, ISI, DSE, GIPE demand you to be good at mathematics [some of them also do not allow people to take the entrances if they didn't had Maths till +2]. But I guess even in your BBS you must be having a paper somewhat related to "Statistics" or "Application of Mathematics into Economics". You can sit for JNU [if you had statistics as a paper] which has two courses, one the general M.A. Economics and the other M.A. in Economics [with specialization in world economy].

Moreover, if you are hell bent on joining economics then there are some regional universities which accept people from other backgrounds.

But everything depends on what you are planning to do after your Masters, viz., Research and academia, MBA, Journalism.....

Hope it helps.

Cheers !!

hey thanks for the reply.

i am interested in knowing more details on GIPE and DSE entrances. Primarily i want to know if these entrances are 'crack-able'(if that's a word!) for non economics, stats, maths and engg background!!....Is this an option for someone with a BBS degree?

Hi !!!

Well the "crack-ability" of the paper entirely depends on an individual. But so far DSE is concerned, it's too tough for a person without sound knowledge of Eco+stats+maths to crack it. You have to work really hard to get you thorough with the fundamentals. There are four main topics Micro, Macro, Stats and QM. Past papers are available in the DSE library [Xerox shop], you can go through them and decide. The DSE paper as well as the course is quite tough and rigorous in comparison.

GIPE has a very standard type of an entrance test. Not too much emphasis on Economics. I guess it's more "crack-able" but the no. of seats is too less.

Hope it helps !!!

Cheers !!!
