career's future steps- not clear! - 06-09-2008, 05:09 PM

Hi All,

This is my first post (am new to this community).
I have some queries abt career..mba...i knw there are umteen no. of threads regarding these in teh forum but still not able to clear out my decisions and hence posting it out here ...as yet another thread...to seek ur advices

i am wrking in software for close to 7yrs now..n am BE graduate..now "wat next?" is my Big question. I have started feeing stagnated and have becme less productive of-late...!!
1) should I now pursue my studies with mba?

2) wud having just BE, be sufficient all the time? am also pretty much sure (ateleast at this time) that i wont enjoy by going twrds manegment line..becoming a PM in a company, i wud rather be content doin some tech stuff (even it its aless challening wrk)...

3) are there any PROGRAMS to grow in the TECHNICAL path (that are worth doing even after so many yrs of exprn) that add value in addition to BE deg...or mba wud be better choice worth opting for..?

4) also if i think of doing mba abroad, is there any way (avoid tofel, GMAT) to enroll for it...? (as i am nw also trying for h1b) hw worth wud it be to opt for evening classes or long distance learning if at all...

Even after so many yrs of exprn i am still not very clear of my future goals...VERY CONFUSED. wud be glad if i can carry myself technically well... (am still not a domain expert) but at the sametime dont want to repent later of not doing further studies (which wud be late then)....

what shoudl i do...please advice me.....

Thank you.

Thats a good amount of work experience. Your future course of action should depend on your future plans. Its firstly advisable for you to search and dig in more info what an MBA is like, what is it all about, how will it help you at attaining your goals and brighten your career path. you shall find the info on various MBA Classes sites or just google it.. More on you will find that there are various specialisation in MBA and there are some into technical fields, so that could be the area you may be looking at. adding on even IITs are now offering MBA Prog and they take people with engineering background..
About MBA abroad i dont think there is any option except clearing GMAT or Tofel..

In symbiosis, SIBM and SCMHRD would be good to go for.

Hi Rusted!

Career planning is an oxymoron!
So, don't be bothered about not having a very clear picture even after this many years.

Since you have mentioned that you are 'feeing stagnated and have become less productive', something challenging will make you feel better.
You could continue with a technical career path - am sure your company has one. Only 3% opt for a it, compared to a 97% who choose the traditional PL/PM path. That's for the kind of challenge it is. Ask around, you'll find info.
