hello,

Iam presently working in a law firm. I would want to know which is the best option in MBA after law...whether its finance, HR, MRKTNG, etc. I want to opt for something which would give me better returns (pay packages) and more oppertunities.

Hi. This is Neha. I completed my graduation in 2008 in Chemistry from St. Stephens College. I worked for 6 months in a KPO as a research associate and then I quit the job due to some reasons. I had appeared for CAT 2008 and got 85%ile. I am not satisfied with the result because I had not prepared for the exam. Now I am confused as to what should I do? Getting a job in the current economic scenario with only graduation that too in a non-commerce subject is not easy. So I m left confused over what should be done. Please help.

i had 82.xx%ile last year and was in same situation as urs....I prepared for CAT....and joined an NGO so tht this year doesnt look like a gap year.....u can do the same.....or appear for exams like GRE/JAM(fr iit's) as back up options.....or may be learn a language-chinese/japanese.....coz dropping solely fr CAT would be risky....nt becozz getting 99.xx is tuff...but becozz iim's change their criteria big tymm

PS: I believe in all earnest tht u shud be adding sumthing to ur CV each year........
All the best to both of u !!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Neha,
Have you filled any form with ur CAT score (say wellingkar or any other) or have u taken any other test..
I tell you, experts say that "recession is the best time to pursue ur studies".. so if u have some options u can go for it.. but B4 taking any step.. think what ru upto.. I mean u mentioned u r not satisfied with 85%ile in CAT.. that means u r not interested in going for the clgs tht fall in this range of CAT %iles.. in that case u can drop off an year and again give it a try.. but remember what if same thing happaned again..
I'll suggest u to atleast try for some clgs and pursue ur dream of doing MBA as these r tough times to get jobs with simple graduation.. but when u'll passout from an MBA 2 years from now market will most probably be good and companies will get bullish in recruitment and at that time u'll have the advantage of being an MBA..

and Lastly, age is a very importatnt factor in these decisions.. if u think ur young enough.. u can go ahead of taking a risk of one year.. may u'll be better prepared next year and fair much better in the exam.. in such a case u can take up a small job with main focus on prep... or u can completly dedicate ur time to studies.. believe there are many ppl who drop an year to prepare for CAT without taking up employment any whre..

Regards,
saurabh

i think it depends on what you want . whether you want to do mba from top 20 mba colleges or do mba from a college which can get you a decent job. if you are bent upon giving mba next year you should not sit idle atleast do a job which ofcourse does not affect your studies or do something which adds to your profile because next year also more than 3 lakh candidates will give cat and how will you differentiate yourself comparing with others

Go to indianngos.com, joining a ngo depends upon your interest of social work (child care, women rights, environment etc) so pursue according to your interest and your willingness.

Working will definitely give you a clear idea about your interest areas and would be helpful in utilizing your MBA degree to the fullest. There is also a pre-MBA certification named 'Certified Associate Business Manager' which is like a prelude to your MBA studies and definitely adds weight-age to your profile.

Yeh, even CS seems like a viable option but are you really interested in it? If you are not finding a job then you might as well do these courses and certifications. BTW you could even do your m.com in correspondence and that will give you 16 years of education if you want to pursue a MBA degree abroad.

All the very best.
