Changing your job or domain? Look here for all the support -
25-06-2008, 01:12 PM
Dear All,
Many of us come across times when we want to make a move in our career and start looking for new avenues and fresh challenges. This thread is being started with the sole purpose that community members can help each other with their own experiences, data base , recommendations, job alerts, and all..............
To explain a bit more searching a job is not always as simple as putting your CV on those coveted websites in particular when you also want to weigh options in parallel domains, I mean a software will never forward a Java guys profile for marketing however hard he might be aspiring for, similarly a financial analyst having experience in fixed income can't jump thresholds of experiences in equity and thus found is CV always stuck at the first barrier itself if he doesn't tweak his real information. The closest solution to this can be placement agents as there's a lot of human intervention, understanding, phone calls involved in process but again they are grow like mushrooms in monsoon and never disclose whether they are alive or have found a job themselves
Hence this thread, where you can participate if you are:-
- A job seeker and like many just interested in downloading information. Welcome, but try your best to add value to the process and discussion.
- Any other puy who's is not exactly seeking a new job but want to weigh options, please feel free to put your queries here if unable to find any suitable thread on the same otherwise.
- A Puy yourself working in big names and want to share opportunities available in your company or network. Obviously there's always time to pay back by helping next generation.

- Someone working in placement agency or may be running one of your own, go and use the abundant talent base of India called as Pagalguy but make sure you accustom yourself with rules and discipline with which we follow this.
Some do's and don'ts to be observed strictly:-
- First of like every where else on this forum no email IDs at all. No compromise on this will be tolerated at any cost and puys violating this are liable to face official warnings/action.So in giving contact info and Ids please use attachments, which means convert everything in doc. format or text file and paste a downloadable link of the same.If response is good we may come with a collection of all useful information periodically and may also put a publicly editable google doc. for the same.
- Please try to put verified and authentic information only, which means no doubt you may get your hands on document named "All placement agents of Delhi" but simply don't put the same here as in most of the cases these records are too old and result in 95% bounce mail. So please put a single record only but the one whom you are sure of being useful.
- Try being very objective in your posts and information like when you put some company/placement agent/situation-vaccant's contact info (again as attached doc only) try adding your own inputs too in terms of making relevance more clear.
- And last but not least value your posts before hitting "submit" tab, I mean there's no point getting into petty arguments on worth of a company/sector/placement agency/website and all or in quoting a 1000 words long post and posting "Well Said" below!!

In end I offer my apology if I sound like Papa figure at few places but please understand this is extremely new exercise and hence can conflict with certain standard practices at PG. As of now mods have only given permission to open such a thread on experimental basis and it will be under observation for few weeks before getting a full green signal.
With Regards,
Andy
P.S. I personally feel that with the kind of network we have on PG this thread has potential to become a major support in future but in case you differ please wait for few days before putting this under scanner.
Never underestimate puy-force.

I just wanted to ask people who are already an MBA that whether they are now satisfied with the job profile they have got if they were not previous to MBA.
Because most of the people just want to do MBA just for changing there domain and job profile. So answer to this question may help them a lot.

I was happy with IT before and after MBA, I am again into IT, which not many people prefer. I always liked IT but wanted to be in shoes of Business Analyst rather than a developer/architect. Hence, MBA in systems helped me achieve it.

Andy...
Do clarify one thing for me. We get quite a lot of "Help Me Plz!!" threads. Most of these are by people frustrated with their present jobs and want an exit. Maybe an MBA may help, maybe it won't. Maybe they're not looking for an MBA as an option. But they need some counselling and support. Is this thread for them as well? Coz from your post, it seems that this thread will also end up as a repository. we have enough of those, and they are working. Can we use this thread as one for counselling?
If this thread does work out as one for counselling, I suggest we can make this thread a sticky. It'll surely reduce those "Help Me Plz!!" threads that pop up now and then.
Regards,
Grondmaster

Hi Grond,
I guess I owe some explanation here
First how this thread came into picture:-
I never wanted to be (or could not be) a software professional but chose to some how complete my engineering coz got my seat from competition and nobody talk to you business (read yem bee ye) before you are graduate ! Then from all my final calls I decided in favor of an institute which is known slightly less in the corporate circle in order to save my one year and enter industry soon and gain some offhand practical experience. Strange are the ways of our world where people managers start acting like robots after few years and few thousands of CV scanning that seldom you'll see someone going beyond your institute and that too with only one dimensional reputation what he/she carries. The end result was that inspite of carrying all so called competency and/or zeal you feel stuck up and just want to do anything to "get that right job" (no advertisement intended).
Now as finally I have managed to get the job I wanted I would point certain experience (personal) gained during this exercise:-
- Brand, brand and brand its so important to carry names behind you as you become so more sellable, afterall nobody cares/dares to check reality so better name you can decorate your CV with better you make your chances.
- Experience is the only yard stick in India to judge potential, so a pony with 3 years of work ex will always be priced better than some newbie stallion unless stallion can produce some certificate to popularize his brand.
- Contacts do matter, so people coming from non-corporate based background be better more patient
Thats where I thought that when PG can help many minnows in cracking good B skools like me then why not we can be united once again to pursue our endeavor for excellence after that also. So some of the activities this thread can coordinate are like:-
- Objective collection of placement agencies data-base, I mean not merely a random collection of few ids where 80% mails bounce back but some personally verified results producing agencies like say ABC agency is found to be good for back office finance related jobs, PQR has good contacts in MNC marketing circle, XVY is been found for NCR region Credit card based jobs etc. As mentioned that in industry contacts do matter a lot, but then you have to know the right people who can produce results and mean business.
- Personal sharing of information among puys, afterall I never consider PG less than any alumni as such.

- Personal experiences and learnings from puys who underwent a similar ordeal/pursuit.
- Puys already settled in coveted brands can use this to refer other PG members particularly if they are working in HR itself.
- And ofcourse help me please posts are welcomed if made in a proper format (to be released soon) and purpose. Not like "guyz help me in getting some i-banking job"

At last I understand this may not be a thread for IIMs stalwarts as such but certainly for people from lesser mortal institute who believe they can perform much better if given an opportunity. So if everything is there and information is the only gap, you are welcomed to use this thread as a portal to know exactly when and where you should send your CV!!
With Regards,
ANdy

Hey rmbt,
I need some info on Consultancy in IT Industry. I have 21 months of experience in IT before I joined NM. I am looking forward to a Consultant Profile in IT industry. Can you give me some pointers on what sort of Consultancy are Indian IT MNCs into presently? Do we have good propotionate amount of business in IT Consultancy? Are IT MNCs presently more involved in application consultancy like SAP consultancy etc?
Also please let me know certifications (like ITIL) which can help get a consultancy profile? Or should I tread into domains like Finance and improve my domain exposure and then tread back into IT consultancy in the Finance Vertical.
Also please let me know your responsibilities as a Business Analyst? If possible differentiate between a BA and Consultant Profile in IT.
TIA
