Career Question- Seeking Help!!! - 17-06-2008, 12:38 AM

Hi Puys!!!
Hope all of you are fine....

I am in real Confusion about joining one out of two Companies (So thought of seeking help and who better than Puys to help me in this regard)...

I did Mech Engg from Delhi and got placed in two companies - Accenture and CSC ( Both are IT companies and most of you would have heard their names).
CSC offered a Testing Profile for me and Accenture didnt mention anything specific about type of work.

Now the problem - I did Mech Engg and also did not have C, C++ in 11th/12th class so I have no idea about It related work and projects work in these companies. I have heard that in these companies, you have to go vigorous training in initial months and you have to clear tests of C, C++, SQL etc in the beggining itself which are quite difficult specailly for me as I have no background in it and I donot have any interest in it.

I just want to do MBA asap and thus also want to have some free time to study along with the work. Most prob CSC will be in Noida and Accenture will be outside Delhi. CSC's work is of testing so I think it will be very boring and less useful (but time will be there to study). But I have doubt that my work ex will not be so worth specially in MBA interviews. I mean the Work Ex may not be worth enough as MBA interviews depend a lot on the Work Ex.

Whereas Accenture requires lots of hard work as subjects and languages are very new for me. Training is vigorous and i dont like studying IT subjects. Also posting will be outside Delhi so studying for MBA will be less effective there than it will be in Delhi as adjusting there will take time .

So I am really Confused which company to join and thus seeking for help!!!
Hoping that You will help me....

My few points on ur query.

1) If your ultimate aim is to do MBA then it doesnt matter what kind of work ex you have as any workex less than 2 years is not given higher preference.

2) In MBA interviews, you will be treated as a fresher as by the time u'll have calls, u will have work ex of only 5-6 months. You wont be having much knowledge , so even the panel wont ask u much about work ex.

3) If you think u can clear B school of ur choice this year, then join CSC noida. As i already said, small work ex is not much of any importance, no problem with testing profile.

4) Accenture wil relocate u, u wil have to work hard, less time for stduy..Complete no no if u want to get into a good b school this year.

Ask if u have more doubts.

Kanika,

My opinion - work experience does count for a lot, especially if you do not get a good enough score. It can give you an edge. Dont make this a hard and fast rule.

Weigh both the options carefully. A good work experience gives you a solid base upon which you can decide how your future education can be.

And if you do decide not to join either and prepare for a CAT a gap does appear. You can always say you took a drop for CAT but then the work experience you have there after wont count for much.

Ultimately the decision is yours. If you can manage work and studies well and good. But that is for you and you only to decide.

Cheers and hope you figure it out.
