Role change from Software Developer to Business Analyst/Business Development - 22-03-2008, 02:09 AM

Hi Puys,

I have a career dillema. I have 3 yrs of IT Software Development experience in one of the most reputed firms of the world. Trying my luck for MBA abroad this year.

Profile:
B.E. Top 10 Engg Schools, Computer Engg
Good Acads
GMAT 720
Software Developer, India
3 yrs of experience

I applied to US, UK and Singapore and I am getting a ding everywhere and the problem is that feedback I am getting is that my experience is too technical experience.

Now if nothing happens on MBA front, I am planning to go for a role change as a Business Analyst/ IT Sales and Marketing/ Business Development Manager. I will be first trying in my own firm, and move out to market if my company does not allow it. I am pretty certain that I would not like to continue in software development field and would move into management roles.

Puys, I am planning to work in that role for about two years and then apply again to US.

My query is that, do you recommend me going for this change and strategy of applying again after two years with some management experience? Also how many of you have been able to do a role change in your organization? Is it really tough for your own organization to allow this or you had to quit and join another firm for a role change? Also without a MBA will it be very tough? It would be really good if I can get names of companies which hire engineers for such roles.

Hoping to see a good discussion. :snipersm:

Hi,

Well I did talked to few job consultants, they told me its possible but I would be taken as a fresher, although my salary would be tried to matched upon to my current. I dont know which current organization you working for, I would recommend you to try a role change in your own organization. Its safe as well as you have your own command since I assume you must have been working there for atleast 2 yrs before thinking of a role change. Also if going for GMAT the universities would think that you progressed in the same parent company rather than jumping.

Hope that helps, but yes the process is tedious but worth giving a try since the chances of admission would be boosted.

Hi Dhruv,

You are lucky to be in this situation. In my college I had offers from technical organizations as well as interview from Evalueserve. I screwed that interview coz I had a misconception that working there would close the avenues and a MBA would become must.

See, it all depends on you, if MBA from abroad is your dream join as a business analyst. Believe me you will be able to differentiate yourself from the chunk of software engineers that apply. On the other hand if you want to excel in software field as an engineer join the tech organization. Evalueserve would even help in case of Indian colleges.

I hope that helps.
