Let me share by exp. with you guys....
Firstly about me:
BE Computer Science, Mumbai's top Engg. College
Front league IT MNC 2.5 years.
Finished Six Sigma, Wrote papers that got awards and active involvement in functional understanding...
Now armed with this, I spoke to managers. Some welcomed and some said you still require some more exp. I asked them if conventional methods like doing an MBA would help or if they have any workarounds for exceptional candidates etc. Got a lot of brain wash attempts from them....
Finally this is what I could make of it -
1. Its better to do MBA and then get into that domain.
2. With < 3 yrs in Technical would land you as a fresher over there with salaries almost same or marginal hike.
3. Managers don't encourage mavericks and prefer to go by books unless its a aggressive company.
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.

So does that mean you were able to make a shift or still working as a software engg. Btw I have also finished Six Sigma. And our company do promote role changes but at a level of 5+ years of experience. Guess I will be an exception. Also doing an MBA will help but what if I am looking forward for a role change only coz of getting a place in world's top mba program. Because we need something in us that should differentiate us from the crowd of engineers.

Exactly...its about standing out from the crowd with some ground work laid....
I was not able to make a shift with 2.5 yrs exp. Yes they would allow me in a couple of years, but I cant wait so long....so I will be going for MBA....
Moreover what I feel is after 5+ good work ex there is no need for MBA from world's top college. You can easily get in IIMs Executive course as well...

Re: Role change from Software Developer to Business Analyst/Business Development -

Hi,
I m also working in a well known S/W firm fr the past 2.5 yrs, i was also faced with this dilemma, but then I decided to go for a MBA, because now the scenario in the IT industry is changing, there was a time when all these IT firms were in the growth face and at that time people who grew with these firms are the BAnalysts, and managers today, believe me the role changes were so easy and rapid at those times, IT firms were more open minded then, then there aim was to be the best employed firms lso because new roles kept coming up every day with somebody required to fill them up. But now the scenes are in contrast, there are numerous people with great domain knowledge available, all ready to jump into IT for the money they see but will not find eventually, then why would such a company want to loose on a s/w engg. by giving him a role change, see its all aimed towards synergising business tactics for achieving maximum benefits, the day you get a role change, the company looses aall the 2.5 yrs of salary it has put in you to get up your technical expertise.
There was a time companies used to sponsor the certifications, MBA courses, but no more there are plenty available with all these for recruitment then why should it increase its expenses with profit margins already taking a dip.
Hence I would suggest you to do all the sacrifices to reach there, where you wnt to see urself, by sacrifices i mean either two years of study, or joining another firm at a lower pay package, look at the ultimate goal, and not the path taken,...it is better to rely on urself & ur capabilities rather than relying on your company or manager to give u a role change.
but before deciding u shud talk to ur manager first...might be u r the lucky one...
rgds.
Anubhav...

Good Acads
GMAT 720
Software Developer, India
3 yrs of experience
I applied to US, UK and Singapore and I am getting a ding everywhere and the problem is that feedback I am getting is that my experience is too technical experience.
Now if nothing happens on MBA front, I am planning to go for a role change as a Business Analyst/ IT Sales and Marketing/ Business Development Manager. I will be first trying in my own firm, and move out to market if my company does not allow it. I am pretty certain that I would not like to continue in software development field and would move into management roles.
Puys, I am planning to work in that role for about two years and then apply again to US.
My query is that, do you recommend me going for this change and strategy of applying again after two years with some management experience? Also how many of you have been able to do a role change in your organization? Is it really tough for your own organization to allow this or you had to quit and join another firm for a role change? Also without a MBA will it be very tough? It would be really good if I can get names of companies which hire engineers for such roles.
Hoping to see a good discussion. :snipersm:

Transitioning from a business analysis role to a software developer role is not difficult to achieve. Just follow these guidelines;
1. Business Analysis is not similar to software development; As a software developer the primary skills you will be using is your coding skills or programming languages. As a business analyst, you will be using communication and other soft skills. You will be talking to users, customers, stakeholders a lot more.
2. You will need to develop your requirements management skills; As a computer programmer, all you care about is coding or getting the software development project completed, As a business analyst, you will care more about the completeness or correctness of your requirements. You won't care about what sort of programming languages or technologies were adopted in achieving your goals!
