Unhappy taking a break from job - 28-02-2008, 04:08 PM

Hi, I have a 2.5 yr old kid to look after and i have been a s/w engineer for 5 year at infy at bangalore and i am tired of this. I feel that i am not spending enough time with my child. Hence I am thinking of taking a break for a year. But doubts still persists in my mind, about my career after the break. Will i be able to pick up after the break? How are these kind of breaks/sabbatical viewed in current industry?

I want to know if there are anybody in the forum who have taken a break for sometime and wish to share your experiences with me, i shall be greatful and feel motivated. Thanks for your replies.

@alfsolomon
Hi ,
though i have not taken any break from my work-ex but i still feel that if you really want to spend time with your only kid then find a job that is less demanding on time front or find a job where you can work at home.
You have to take care of only kid's future too.Break might introduce a negative effect in your career.Its the story of every working man/woman.But then only you have to manage this thing.If every one is effectively juggling between work and personal life,then even you can.
Try to manage time, its just a phase of life.It will pass.Have faith on God.

All the best

Hi,

I have taken a break from my job. I was working under the same boss for 2 years and was really bored of his way of handling things. Also my schedule was not leaving me with any time to prepare for MBA entrances....hence i decided to quit my job. Its now more than 2 months that i am at home. I get frustrated at times coz things havent turn up the way i had anticipated.

Please dont take a break from your job as things may not turn out the way you think. Try to look out for a change of job or as suggested by accenture07, try to work from your home. And under any circumstances dont lose hope. Everything happens for good.

Regards,
GeminiGal

After taking a break for a year, you will not like stepping out and working again. I will not recommend 1 year break.

I have heard mindtree consulting allows woman to bring their small kids at office cretch and spend time with them while working. IBM offers woman to work 1-2 days a week from home and that also allows quality time to spend with kid.

Life is extremely challenging for salaried class specially with kid but keep going. Your solid career will help your kid in future.

I am working in MindTree. Its right that you can bring your children and also MindTree encourage life work balance. There are many job profile which you can take to get time for your child.
