Career Change to Data Analytics - 12-07-2007, 04:46 PM

Hi,
I am currently working in Accenture for the last one year after passing out from Bits-pilani in 2006 with a civil engg degree. Of late i've come to know of Data Analytics through my friends who managed to get interships in a couple of companies working on it.Further research has given me insights into their areas of their work,as in Operations Research,Probability and Statistics which have been a great source of interest during my college days and I managed to get some gud grades as well. Now I want to get into the Predictive modeling area of this field. Is it possible for me to get a job in this area or will my software experience be ofany hindrance to it?Or are there any certification courses around to help me out in this pursuit???

Data analytics is job profile offered to people:

1 MBA(operations)
2 BE/B.tech(from IITs/ or frm top engg college)
3 M tech/ MS
4. MSc(Maths)

I think you should go for higher studies.

Or you can always ask your friend who did his intern.

All the best.

Hi Chap,

predictive modelling requires knowledge of BI tools like Informatica/cognos etc. Modelers develop omodels (basically mathematical equations) which factor all variables to forecast trends or behaviour of a market/product etc.

Mostly done for consumer behaviour, stock mkts, fin portfolios etc. Based on historic data and deep understanding of respective domains and markets.

I am yet to see any civil engg in similar position and as rmbt mentioned, only premier instts are preferred for certain courses only. PhDs in stats/eco are preferred from premier instts. Also deep domain knowledge required for actual modelling (vs technology support or tool dev/support to modelers).
You can start with tool dev/support for analytics. SAP BW, cognos, microstartegy certifications may help to get in the tech related analytics jobs.

I am an MCA (decent job) and i think i have an attitude towards analyses.
Is it possible for me to do some short term distance learning certification that could provide inroads towards doing phd in data analytics.
