ICFAI or CFA - US ??? - 10-04-2007, 09:13 PM

Hi

I am completely new to this CFA and MS(Finance) thing that is going around here. Infact I am unnaware also to the terms also that are used on this forum but trying hard to acquaint myself with the terminology asap, so I can join the race. For eg: Just came to know that UGC stands for "University Grants Commission". (Just FYI to let people here who might reply to this post know were I stand on the CFA / Finance platform). I am a commerce graduate and have done IATA (International Air Transport Association) course. I have 4 years work experience with the Travel Industry + BPO. Since I have decided to change my field, I was introduced to ICFAI - MS(Finance) 360 Flexible Distance Learning course by a friend of mine who is pursuing the course here in Mumbai.

I had a few questions comning up in my mind and a lot of confusion which I would like to get cleared before I go ahead and enrol for the ICFAI course, here in Mumbai. Will post my questions as and when I think of them, for now here is what came up in my mind.

1. I have been hearing a lot of debate over the CFA USA program and ICFAI CFA. What is it all about ? I know that US Cfa has lost the case againt UK CFA.

2. Is ICFAI approved by AICTE ? Can one use the "CFA" designation on completion of the MS (Finance) 360 Flexible Learning Program, from ICFAI ? I know for sure that the course from ICFAI is more in-depth and very good compared to the US CFA program.

3. Where can one enrol for for the USA CFA program ? How do I go about enrolling for one, if I have to ?

4. Does ICFAI MS (Finance), Mumbai, have any recognition globally, in countries like US, UK, etc. ?

This is all I can think of for right now. Will surely ask more questions later.

Regards
Nayna

1. in ninty decades us-cfa and icfai joined hands to introduce cfa program in india.later on some dispute aroused b/w them, so they parted ways.icfai started giving its own cfa. some 1 year ago cfainstitute-us files a case againsty icfai as 'cfa' is patent of cfainsti.-us, which is still pending.those who joined before this case was filed will get cfa from icfai.
2.icfai is approved by UGC.it is more vast atleat in structure.it comprises of some 16 oddsubjects and 3 levels.cfa-us is more integrated with 3 levels.for beginer ivfai will be better as stakes are not as high as cfa-us if u not pass it in first attempt.
3. for cfa-us u can enrol online on cfainstitute.org
4. icfai-caf is recognised in most of the countries except us,canada.

Nayna, welcome to the forums. You have asked so many questions in a controversial topic ! I am sure if you search you will be find answers to many questions. But still i will answer your questions briefly:

Quote:
1. I have been hearing a lot of debate over the CFA USA program and ICFAI CFA. What is it all about ? I know that US Cfa has lost the case againt UK CFA.
Dont worry about case. ICFAI is a university manadated by economic legislation to award CFA charter. The CFA brand from ICFAI will continue and there are 3394 CFAs from ICFAI till now.

2. Is ICFAI approved by AICTE ? Can one use the "CFA" designation on completion of the MS (Finance) 360 Flexible Learning Program, from ICFAI ? I know for sure that the course from ICFAI is more in-depth and very good compared to the US CFA program.
As i said ICFAI is approved university under UGC. You get both CFA charter and Ms finance.

CFA Institute website.

4. Does ICFAI MS (Finance), Mumbai, have any recognition globally, in countries like US, UK, etc. ?
It is a masters degree from a University. So it is recognised all over the world. Recognition of your comprehensive profile depends on kind of experience you gain after Ms finance.

A diamond is cut and polished and then it is sold like an expensive hot cake. CFA/Ms finance is first step- The cut part. The second and most important step is polishing part- Work experience in Finance. If you end up spending 5 years in research profile in a global finance company after Ms finance ICFAI, your experience will polish you and you will become a diamond !

Hi guys

Thank you ami_mba and BaBU. Thnx a ton for the promt reply.

I am currently going thru the thread started by you BaBu. The "Re: Chartered Financial Analysis (CFA) from ICFAI_Hyderabad" one.

I am finding all my answers one by one there. Its a big thread and an interesting one. Started reading it from the very first post and came across a lot of interesting argument. Very interesting thread. Did not find it first, otherwise I would not have posted my questions, coz would have found my answers. I am still reading every word in this particular thread for my own information. Just polishing my knowledge on CFA.

Also would like to thank ami_mba, for the patiently giving me the detailed explanation for my questions, about the case and my other querise.

I will see you guys in the "Re: Chartered Financial Analysis (CFA) from ICFAI_Hyderabad" thread. I have posted the same query there too, so do not go thru the pain again for me. Thanks. Continue the good work guys. Your experience and knowledge is really helping peope like us grow.

Regards
Nayna

@nishi : I would advice you to read this thread also - http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/career...ns-on-cfa.html (Need some Opinions on CFA.) to get more info on the US CFA so that you can make a balanced decision.
