MBA vs Phd (subsequently teaching career): a Dilemma - 27-02-2007, 01:22 PM

I just need advices from the gurus here.

Age : 25
IT porfessional, 3 years work exp., excellent academic record

I am sick of sittin in front of computer and remain cut off from social world for entire life. I want to change my field. Now the problem is that I am very confused. I have dreams of being an entrepreneur, but definitely it requires money and experience. Now, I can think of two things only; Either doing 1) an MBA or 2) doing phd in my field and start teaching, bcoz i am good in studies. I could'nt decide wat to do ? I have self analyzed myself and found that I have a very restlessness nature and can't stick to one situation or job for continous many years. I work best under relaxed situations. I want to be part of job where I can implement my ideas/creativity and have opportunities to change my work after every few years.

So any1 please tell me what would be more suitable for me ? MBA or Teaching ?

Hmm.. me not guru.. but..

I would advice --Go for the MBA--It will add to your skill sets..widen your choices..and give you some time to settle down in terms of focus and decide what you want to do with your life..Even if you do not like corporate life after MBA you can take up Teaching..and you will have the confidence that you have taken up teaching by choice ..not compulsion..

Regards
Tanveer

Find your call boss. and go for it. MBA and Phd are both at either ends of the spectrum. If you dont rate one above the other, then u can pursue either roads to your destination. I plan to be a teacher in the years to come. not after phd, but after MBA. MBA might be right for you because you seem so restless and so full of energy....the choice is of course entirely yours.
like the chesire cat from alice in wonderland would say, "Take either road. if you walk long enough, you will surely reach somewhere. only, walk long enough." All the very best for your life. Do let us know what u've decided. like

Go for the teaching ....

Reasons:

1) U want a relaxed work environment.

Life after MBA will be anything but relaxed.. Given ur stellar academic record u will find the temptation of huge money too hard to resist and will end up joining a company where u will have to literally slog. Now some guys like it. But not u going by ur comments. There is a dog eat dog world out there for MBAs.

2) U do not like sitting on computers for long hours.

That is something that a majority of professions post MBA require. There are exceptions but then they are not as well paying.

3) You do not like monotonous stuff.

Most of the jobs post MBA are monotonous at least for the first few years. U r not going to enjoy that.

Besides a career in research and teaching is anyday much more creative and fulfilling.

For u it is a no choice. Avoid the trap and choose Ph. D. without blinking an eyelid. Do not feel trapped by social pressures.

MBA is for much more aggressive guys..

Hard Work is not known to have killed anybody, but Why take a chance?

thanx guys for ur replies.

I agree with tanveer and blue_zzap that after doing MBA i will many opportunities.. i can come to teaching, do job in any field or start my venture.

yes subodh post-mba life might be hectic. As far as computer thing is concerned, i think u didnt get it clear. what i meant was that in IT field, using this computer consumes alot of ur mind.. which i guess post-mba wont be that hectic as it is now.

I was more likely be convinced earlier though that I shud pursue for MBA.. but i want a neutral opinion from general people , which i got now. Now, i guess next step will be to short-list universities and to give GMAT.

thanx once again

My 2 cents worth. since I have taught full time and still teach part time.
If you are creative look at Mass comm/ads as a career with courses frm instts like MICA etc. Regualr MBA also is a option as others suggested.

Teaching--is a different ballgame even with a PhD. Its more about communicating, creating interest in class apart from domain and subject knowledge. many excellent acads may not be good teachers. you can always teach part time even while working. thus you have best of both worlds. PhD is not an necessity. Also teaching differs from culture to culture and country to country, type of course etc.

I must thank you all guys. You guys have really helped me to think beyond what I had in my mind. I have decided that doing MBA is a good option for me. Teaching can be done after MBA too. I might have different choices after MBA, which currently I don't have.

Thank you all guys once take. take care

I too have similar kind of mindset. I have not even completed my MBA and i am right now in summer training but i feel like corp life is not for me. I feel much alienated towards the culture of corporate life, music(whole day i have to unwillingly listen to music being played in my office, then in our canteen A.K.A Cafeteria Duh! we have a large TV playing loud music, i can't even have my lunch in peace), parties etc. I am more inclined towards a serene life. My parents have already told me that it would be better for me to do a Phd and go in teaching line.

To my utter surprise, some close friends of mine in my MBA class have told me the same thing without even asking.

I don't know i am confused. Please guide. My goal of life is to open a school in my community. Even i am pursuing MBA, it would be just for money. Then i have some 'ethical values' which i can't compromise.

I want to ask about ur teaching experience. How was it?

A very stupid question to ask but Is there any MBA career in HR or IT (because i would be taking these options in specialization in 2nd year) which provides good money and some serenity.
