All of us passed out in 2006 and when we applied we had workex of just 4-5 months..
What you are doing is also correct, many guys do MFE after MBA.. Infact I know few ppl from IIMA, XLRI, IIMC, IITD applyin for MFE after MBA..
But if u are so sure of doin a MFE, y don't do a FRM or CFA instead of doin a MBA.. Neways, u must have thot over it and its ur desicion.. atb..

yep agree with you..however the concept of MBA is to gain fundamentals in Finance and across various domains...only MFE will lead to career totally techncial in finance which i m not looking at..

Let me give you an example.....IB after MBA gives you a prfoile wherein you re invloved as an analyst..but not invovled into product formation becuase it involves high level of technical knwoledge of finance which the MFE guys have......

Now MFE after MBA will equip you with both the skills..and it is an universaly accepted fact that MBA in finance by no means mean tht u re an expert of finance..it's just tht you understand the gist of finance......

now coming back to schools....

yep i agree tht freshers do get admitted idirectly for MFE...however i was talking specifically of the schools like Berkeley and London school of busines..

i had a comprehensive look at their student profiles.....wherein most of the students had masters or even an PHD before coming in...though there were someguys directly from bacherlos but then they had bachelr's from top-most universities.....

also coming on the CFA point most guys entering in these two universities are already CFA level-2..so you can see the kind of profiles of student who enter into these two universities...

but yes there re always exceptions.....

ya ur correct.. but actually i never looked a berkeley as the profile of students their is too gud as u said and i felt i won't "fit" there.. and u can call it my ignorance or mistake i never actually researched on UK schools.. atb, i hope u do well.. btw i am plannin to do quite opp of u.. doin a MFE, have a gud work ex and if needed do a MBA... i know not many ppl do MBA after MFE, mostly ppl do MFE after MBA... but i have certain thots in my mind.. lets c how they work out.. atb to u at vgsom..

Re: Financial engineering! - 18-05-2007, 12:54 PM

Hello friends, I have a question on financial assistance in general.
I have applied to MFE program at UC Berkeley (I think I have comparative good credentials, but not in finance).
The 1 year course cost about US $ 70000 => Rs. 30 lakhs(including living expenses).
If I have to apply for the visa (if I get admission), I will have to show availaability of financial support.
* I have about Rs. 5 lakhs savings and my own flat (worth at least Rs. 50 lakhs, that I do not want to sell)
* I need SPECIFIC steps to get financial assistance (loan) if I get admission
* I have stayed at U.S. as a student and did my M.S. and PhD few years back, but that was with full financial aid from the University. Now, if while reviewing application for F1, I think the U.S. consulate prefers having own financial strength (rather than loan). What do I do in that case?

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Hi Rajajoy,

My two cents on ur query

I think first of all if u get in UCB (Haas) u dont have to worry for financial ass as UCB has a No co-signer loan programme for all admitted MFE students..so tht will tke care of ur financial needs..and i think it worth investing tht much money if u re getting UCB...

Secondly abt the visa thing...yep U.S consulate prefers having own financial strength but not in case of top universities.....

So if u re getting an top university then going through loan wont be a prob for visa as those visa guys know the value of university and the kind of students they admit...

and arguably UCB is the best MFE course globally ( may be LSB can compete with it)..it's like an Harvard for mba....

Also if u re still not satisfied then u can contact the existing indian students by asking their contacts from the Adcomm..they will definitely provide you those once you re admitted...

and wish u all the luck for UCB and ahead!!!!

yes, u can surely provided u work on ur SOP and recos.. u can look at my profile on the previous page and u will find tht my profile is very normal.. urs is definitely better than mine!!!
having said tht not only profile but the SOP which convinces the adcom tht u indeed want to do an FE is more crucial.. also ur undergrad math marks and a gud reco frm a math prof and ur employer are important.. u can also look for CFA/FRM to get some finance knowledge as well as make ur profile look even better provided u have time/money for tht..
also a lot depend on ur choice on univ.. some programs like nyu, staford, chicago are math intensive while some like cmu is more on computational side.. while columbia, michigan are a mix..
But beware, the competition for FE in india is gettin huge now a days and it will be even more the next yr.. ur gre score is also gud.. so just need to work on other things i mentioned..

Vishal
