Business Analyst from Hardware Sales: Is it possible?? - 10-11-2006, 05:30 PM

I am a Graduate in IT, pursuing Marketing and IT as specialisation from Indian Business Academy, B'lore. I have always scored more than 65% including my MBA. I am an Fresher without any work experience.

I am joining Redington India as an Management Trainee ( Sales). It is SCM Solution provider, IT Hardware and software distributor, [ Redington - End to End SCM Solutions!!! ].
After training i will handle key accounts, develop and manage the channel and accounts.Its a pure sales job.

I want to be a Business Analyst sometime in my career. Preferably in IT biggies like Infosys or Wipro.

Can i take a shift to a role of BA from Sales role?
How do i prepare myself to achieve my target? i.e. be a BA
What value addition can i make out of this job in hand, if i am looking the role of BA?
Is it a step in the right direction?
If no, what should i do??

Plz give me suggestion.... Thanks

Possible. IDC and Gartner and similar co.s hire analysts for analyzing, forecasting and reporting hardware/peripherals mkt where you can expertise.
also Infy/wipro hires SCM specialists as business analysts.
Given IBA's market standing work for atleast 5-8 years in redington/similar profiles and gain depth knowledge abt supply chain and hardware market and then apply for Infy/Wipro as business analyst (senior positions). knowledge of suppluy chain tools like i2 or SAP SD/Oracle SCM will help in future.

Well, these consulting/mkt research firms hire from top schools only for fresher or junior positions. IBA is a tier -3 school (am being frank). all these firms maintain a differential hire and pay band policy based on b-school's market standing. for example a SPJAIn student will be hired for a lesser packet in same scale than an IIM-L student, subject to similar academic background and experience(salary bands).
once you have worked for 3-5 years or more you will be hired based on your experience for BA roles in wipro/Infy or Gartner/IDC at a market pay scale.
However BA is a generic term/role. many BA's are in to SW development/system analysis-design role, more tech oriented for developing Use-cases etc. Joining as tech BA's is easier than mgmt BA's.
you need to read thru ads/job descriptions to be sure the position is more mgmt oriented before you apply.

i hope i have clarified.

Just to clarify a bit more. Gartner hiring happens at quite senior levels and you'd necessarily need to have dirtied your hands in operations. IDC, Datamonitor, Frost & Sullivan will be more happy in recruiting freshers and low experience candidates. The profile is that of a market analyst. Where you observe market trends, draw your own hypotheses, forecast the markets and the likes......I am tending to believe your understanding of a BA is the one that is widely accepted in the S/W industry....As bizskool mentioned, the BA title as such has become a generalist title...And I'd say it prolly is early in the day for you to be thinking of a shift...And if you really are, then you might not be making the best choice right now in joining that company...Give it a thought

Cheers

In my view your chart has to be drawn backwards.

You are currently offered position as Sales Trainee for SCM .....

And what you want to get into is the BA role.

So the ideal map for you would be --- 1) to try to move into "pre-sales" position from a sales profile ( if the company considers and if you are able to convince them that you are more interested in this )

So as a pre-sales guy in SCM you should gather a thorough application/enterprise knowledge about the various SCM packages ( one which your company is selling and then others )

2) From this then you can easily pitch in for a Functional - BA role in SCM packages. And your technical knowledge, which you gained as pre-sales person, will help you to better integrate the business needs with the technical requirements.

Cheers !

Razabpn;

Yes, you can transition to a business analyst career from a sales (hardware) background and here is how you can;

1. Business Analyst Careers have a low barrier to entry.
Unlike careers in medicine, law and other professions where there are lots of examinations or legal requirements, you don’t have a lot of barriers between you and your business analyst career.

2. Business Analyst Careers for Sales / Marketing Professionals. There are two major requirements for becoming a business analyst. The first has to do with getting IT Business Analysis skills, experience or training. The second has to do with getting business analysis domain experience. You need domain expertise because business analysts focus on solving business problems for a specific industry.

3. Use Your Sales Domain Experience To Your Advantage.
Since you already have marketing / sales domain experience, you should use it to your advantage by applying to sales business analyst jobs. If you apply for finance or insurance business analyst jobs, you will be at a competitive disadvantage because you don’t have finance / insurance domain experience or background. However if you apply for CRM, Marketing, Sales Business Analyst Jobs, you will be able to transfer your current background to your new business analyst career.

I hope that you found my answers helpful. Let me know if you need more information or help!
