How good is a career as a SQE (Software Quality Engineer) - 01-09-2006, 03:50 PM

I have done ECE in the yr 2006 and have been placed. Recently there was a opening for a SQE role in my comapany and I opted for it. well the HR people said me that they dont take freshers as SQE , but still they are experimenting with me and if I suceed they will have more freshers in the quality dept.

Moreover I dont like doing coding and testing. My reporting manager is good and have trained me in 30 days . now I can take over any project single handadly without any problem. Have I taken the right decission . How is the future .???????????//

Rajiv, congrats on the new role.

There is reason why the HR team was hesitant to place a fresher in the Quality role. The role requires an understanding (theoretical and practical) of the entire software development lifecycle. And this is possible after going through the actual drill for a few years and then transitioning into the Quality role.

If you don't like coding/testing (as you've mentioned), and you still want to be part of the lucrative software industry, then Quality is a good path to take up. And your qualifications are in line with it as well. That makes it easier, coupled with the fact that you have a good supporting boss.

Now coming to the question of whether you've taken the right decision. Boss, you've already embarked upon this route and the best thing to do now is to stop rewinding and playing back the movie...just go with the flow and do your best in the current role.

But if you insist, then the following might help put things in perspective. A normal candidate in development (coding) will go through the regular

Team member --> team Leader --> Project manager --> Account mgr --> Group head route (give or take a few additional intermediate steps)

On the quality side, the career path is a little different.
Team member --> Team Leader --> Head of Quality (again, give or take minor variations)

In principle, someone who pursues the regular development options, might have more career options at a later point in time. But all these are just assumptions. My advice to you would be to take the bull by the horns and prove all those assumptions wrong.

Good luck.

Do you have a realistic shot at the top global B-schools?

You are in which company?? Congrats, anyways. In other companies it takes a lot of experience to be a SQA or SQE.

You answered your own question. You don't like testing and coding. So why take the position?
