Re: Help With BSchools Seniors Alumini Pls - 01-03-2006, 09:47 PM

Dude r u for real
U have a job offer from goldman sachs ( although it wud help if u cud elaborate on the job profile) and u r sounding desperate. hard to c y. Look it is really very simple go for the job cos MBA is not something which u r supposed to do but rather something u want to do. Work for an year, I am sure u will add value to urself and enhance ur prospects of making it to a gud b school next time. Moreover ur percentile is no great shakes so it wud be safe to say tht u wud be making a compromise of sorts if u join some coll this year. work hard both at ur job and for ur cat prep and dont lose hope. I am sure there is something better is in store.

P.S. - There was no need to open a new thread for this as u cud have discussed this in careers section. newayz ATB to u watever u choose to do

well the job profile not clarified but specified as operations analyst and from what i can gather is we have to make sure that all the transactions that gs does are carried out properly and in the specified way.. in a way i think it would be real time auditing.. thats what i gather but never know...
so now u know why i am so desperate for an mba..
i see no point in giving cat again coz after two years it would be wise only to aim for the iim and worth less to go to any other institute thats what i feel..
and getting into iims is not my cup of i know that much...
thanks for ur help dudes.

@hatedone
Hmmm can i say something here
From wat u say only two things come to my mind. One tht u dont believe inurself and if thts the case then the battle is lost even before it has begun OR The second and more positive thing is u have realistically assessed ur chances. Now here i wud like to point out tht it is not at all necessary tht u gotta go for IIMs and nothing else (of course wat u said was the ideal case scenario). C there are a number of gud colleges like IIFT, SIBM, SCMHRD etc etc. U have got a wide variety of options and with work ex u probably stand a very gud chance of converting a call ( assuming u get one).
It wud be very easy for u to opt for the easy way out and go for rai or some other university. But wudnt u have a nagging doubt in ur mind wat if u had actually gone for work ex. wat if u had gone to a reputed college.
MBA is not something tht u shud rush headlong into for the lack of other avenues. of course in ur case u even have a job. C the case is quite simple. My opinion wud be to go for the job offer cos if u r dissatisfied with ur job u can always switch jobs but (and here comes the pivotal point) wat if u get into a college jus for the sake of doing an MBA and then u r dissatisfied. Wud u be able to switch to another college and even if u do think bout the monetary losses ( That is my main concern as i myself am from a middle calss family). Dude trust me u got lotsa time on ur hands for prep. Go for the job and keep prepping side by side and most important of all believe the fact tht u will get into a gud college.

P.S. - I apologize if i have offended u in any way and watever i wrote here i did after giving it a bit of thought. Once again ur life and ur decision dude and ATB for ur future.

Re: Help With BSchools Seniors Alumni Pls - 04-03-2006, 12:27 PM

thanks a lot dude it made a lot of sense..
and it did no offend me at all.. if it did then i should not be asking for any guidance..
i know what i am capable of but i also am very realistic.. thats why i dont think i can make it to iims ..
yes with practice i will surely make it..
but i have other issues if i work for 2 years and then study for another 2 yrs that makes it about 26 yrs and then i have to start all over again to settle myself.. and that would be easily taking me to about 30-32 which i think would be too late to settle down as i dont believe in settling unless and untill i have proved to myself and others that i can take care of myself..
if i do an mba now and then struggle i dont have to switch gears again and again..
whereas if i have to work i have to switch to work then switch back to studies then again switch back to working and it can be difficult to adjust i hope u understand what i am trying to say here..
but since i dont have options i think it would be wise to take ur advise and work now and see later if i need an mba..

moreover my mom is behind my back to study... her view is that knowledge may not help now but it will always always come in handy.. i endorse her view but i dont have an option..

@thehatedone
i am not the right person to speak on it.fisrstly i ll give u my intro myself in final year mech. engg. in search for a job.cat and xat % same as urs .and have decided that i will give next shot.mrk my words mate dont be in arush to do mba frm a low grade insti as u will then be in a very difficult situation.u r lucky man u have a job.i know people who hve made to iims working their ass off in a call center.one of my senior got into a decent b school but no work ex he suffered a lot dering the placement so t u r work ex will prove beneficial at that time.just get s good % and the rest will be taken careof.

Re: Help With BSchools Seniors Alumni Pls - 14-03-2006, 08:04 PM

@hatedone
First of all it feels gud tht I actually made sense
But coming back to serious things U said Dat u wud have to work for two years and then study for two years which wud mean tht u are 26 but wat i dont understand is y wud it take u 4 more years to settle. (Plz elaborate further by wat exactly u mean by settling)
Cos let us for a moment assume tht U get into a decent college and at the end of two years U dont get the best placement in the college but even considering the bare minimum in today's scenario U wud be able to get 4-5 L p.a. Now tht is the worst case scenario for u assuming tht u do get into a decent college and tell u what it aint all tht bad mate. And with this sal u wud be settled in bout an year or two (if settlement = marriage ) and even otherwise U wud be well placed.
So don wry prep hard and U will get thru
Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration and i hope i gave u the 1 % rest 99% is upto U

P.S.- Tell ur mom tht if work for an year or two and then do an MBA U further ur chances of getting a gud salary after an MBA and I am sure she wud understand and if she doesnt then u gotta be firm at least and tell her tht It wud be a waste of time going for jus some nukkad ka college
